P; Good question! They are made of matter, gross, slimy matter! What is that, you ask? Well, let's go down the elevator shaft. Next floor is, protein; next, atoms; next, subatomic particles; next, quarks. Voila! We reached the first floor. Up to now, we have been able to see these bits of matter with electronic microscopes, or as flashes and trajectories in the screens of particle accelerators and atom smashers. But wait! there is a dark ghostly basement below. A basement in which no thing can be seen, except, as mathematical consequences. Such things as space/time foam and vacuum fields, such as the Higgs field, which gives mass, but has none are thought to be there. But, what stir such foam, can you name the spoon? Never mind, names are not needed. It's all an scaffolding of consequences all the way down. Some consequences are very practical like being bipolar, and getting help from Prozac, others are very ghostly, just mathematical consequences dancing around an equal sign. Thanks for asking, I had fun with that.
