Have you read Mind and Nature?

That to me is one of the freshest books,

such lucid, distilled thinking. So original

in a way of looking at things.

yes more than once..and " Innocence and Experience " , " Steps to an

Ecology of Mind " , plus " Angels Fear " - Towards an Epistemology of the

Sacred, written with Mary Catherine Bateson ( VERY big in Iran as

well as the U.S.). Anthropologist Margaret Mead was Bateson's first

wife(kinda way back even for an oldster like me),as you probably

already know. His theory of the double bind and his being a founding

father of cybernetics are two biggies for me and his point of view

that Mind is a constituent part of `material reality' and it is thus

nonsensical to try to split mind from matter are mind blowing in his

explications. Back in the day of rock and roll that moved the soul,

most of us would-be hippies of the counter-culture of the 60's,

championed Bateson as a hero's hero and one of the most enlightened

of the " FINDERS " . Someday..and it won't be long IMO, G. B. will be

given credit for being one of, if not the leading Guiding Lights of

Man and Mind.Really glad to see you getting intio him Bill...as Watts

was fond of saying..'You'll be Astonished! "

He's got my vote.

Hadn't heard of *Innocence and Experience*.

I have Angel's Fear. Made a couple of starts at

it, but never could really get into it.

What do you think of that book?

Also, any comments about *Innocence and Experience*?

I didn't know of him as being one of the founders of

cybernetics. I thought most of the credit for that

went to Norber Weiner.

He talks of the double bind in " Steps " ... didn't know

the idea originated with him. I remeber him talking

about schizophrenic parents inducing double binds

by dual messages, one from the verbal (sweetness)

and one from the para-linguistic (hostile).

Seems like he also talked in there about the importance

of therapy in-context... talking about how taking a

kid out of the home, doing therapy... kid shows major

improvement... put him back in the home and Zoom,

right back into it again.

You know I don't think I ever read *all* of " Steps " ...

About mind not being separate from the material --

which works the other way around as well, BTW --

that is something that fits into topics here. Perhaps

we could go into that at some point.

Hi Bill..just wading out of a pile 'o paper right now..and I have

to return after a short answering session and a little dindin but I

wanted to say Yes, we would have much to discuss here on this list

with Batesonian ideas. Matter of fact, that would be a terrific

idea.His thoughts on anthropological,psychological,spiritus-logicus

ways and means and his work in cybernetics would all fit in quite

nicely given his cogent and unique contributions to those and other

fields..a true renaiassance man. You're very correct on Weiner as an

integral spark to the cybernetic field, but Bateson doesn't hold a

back candle here..another area for deeper discussion for sure.

Actually many of the co-workers of his had and have astounding gifts

of thought and expression. Actually the fact that he has been

overlooked here is an astonishment. I really don't know why and

hadn't given it proper thought as to delving into his insightful mind

and offerings until you referred to that quote..It's amazing

sometimes how something is staring you right in the EYE and yet

remains an ephemera of transparancy until someone says, " Hey..that's a

good idea! " Thanks Bill and I look forward to really getting this one

on! A few more to answer than back to Caeser's Quest..or is that

Inquest?

Speaking of which... and excellent resource in this regard

is Manuel DeLanda -- *A Thousand Years of Non-Linear History*,

and *Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy*.

I haven't gotten to Deleuze yet, but am looking forward to

doing so (i.e. *A Thousand Plateaus*)

Bill

PS: I see you have posted a *TON* of stuff, and long messages...

I don't have time to read a lot of stuff, so if you post

something related to the above topic please put an indicator

for me in the subject line...

WOW Bill.you keep coming up with some really neat stuff! I'm gonna

check this Manuel(one of my most favourite names) Deleuze fella

out...Very interesting promo on your part..I'm beggining to think we

have a lot of common likes and interests..are you married Bill..do

you have a girlfriend? LOL..LOL..I don't know why on earth you've

been asked that so many times here..( well I know L.E. asks everyone

that[this is NOT a sarcasm or slam BTW]).. but a couple other times

you've been queried on the same deal..oh well. Yeah I do post a

bunch..and sometimes in riotous machine-gun like fashion and order.

Someone asked the other day about my restless nature..and you know I

thought about that for a long time. Not that I don't realize that

it's my manner..lots of manic panache..and I don't know why or

wherefore, but then as I've said many times here and elswhere..I

don't understand myself at all, and I don't think I really want to

either. And I definitely don't want to begin a regimen of some

pharmeceutical Nirvana for restlessness or hyperness...not a serious

Rx kind of thing anyway. I don't trust doctors a whole bunch...I've

looked at their diplomas on the wall and it certifies them

to " PRACTICE " medicine. For God's sake! I don't care to have anyone

anywhere practice on this delicate flower with tender heart, I'll do

that myself if needs be such, and such sometimes may be? But I'm

taking a heads up re alerting you to anything relavant to your areas

of interest. And you know, the posts are always there to go back to

if the whim ever strikes..that's why I do it I think..I sure don't

expect ANYONE to read everything as it passes..not unless they've

taken Evelyn Wood on steroids..oops there's that dr. thing again!

You do make me chuckle, Bob.

And errr... it's Manuel DeLanda.

The other guy is Gilles Deleuze.

Speaking of great books, another one is

Shadow Syndromes... not suggesting you read it

but... in that book the author suggests that

hypomania is an arguably ideal state :)

In other words if the mania isn't *severe*

and followed by depression.

I also once worked with a software engineer,

extremely bright guy but incredibly hyper.

He was hard to talk to because of it.

I was told he had a condition such that

his brain was naturally in a mode such as

someone on cocaine. They also told me he

wasn't interested in medication to rectify

his condition! Imagine that.

Speaking of which... and excellent resource in this

regard

is Manuel DeLanda -- *A Thousand Years of Non-Linear

History*,

and *Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy*.

messages...

indicator

for me in the subject line...
