Hi Brian, I can only speak from my own experience. Which is to tell a story. There was a situation, deeply important to me, which I was anticipating and in which I wanted to be free of conditioning - vital, alive, present, naked, however you want to put it. In the anticipation there was thinking, 'I should do this / be like this / remember this / forget it all / let go of expectations / not do anything / 'love' - etc. etc.' Then there was the realisation that it was impossible for 'me' to be without conditioning - vital, alive, present or naked. Because what I *am* is conditioning, mechanical seeking, becoming, past/future based - selfish, devious, needy, lacking, etc. And in this case the desire to 'come clean' was so great that all of this activity was rejected. Every thought based in trying to *be* anything - however subtly - was rejected. And as each thought was rejected as it arose they eventually stopped arising. And it was found that without them, without the *activity* of 'me', there was no 'me'. The Identity did not exist. Awake and functioning but with no personal self-sense whatsoever. Of course, the question may then be - what was awake and functioning? Is this still not a personal attachment to the body, thoughts, actions, whatever appearing as if from the perspective of a particular person? Yes. Just not 'me' anymore.
