Tolle offers deep insecurity/attachment about money as the reason for this 'unconscious' behavior! Money acts like a 'button' for them! For many others, sex, power, name, respect, job, spouse, children or... just 'entertainment' works like a similar 'trigger' that pulls them back towards the OLD 'unconscious' identified 'ego centric' behavior. Ramana refers to these tendencies as Vassana and asserts that their elimination is needed for Jnana [True Knowledge] to transform all of life and for Peace to become unbroken! He talks about continued vigilance and Practice until this is achieved! Yes, all imaginings of being spiritually evolved suddenly vanish every time an unconscious ego button is hit. Fortunately, most are able to quickly gather themselves up and reconstruct the pretense and all such anomalies are quickly forgotten so that nothing need be looked at too closely. Ramana's " identity " is out of time and space..... how could one discuss about what he " achieved " or didn't have to " achieve " ....?... this kind of discussions about..... " effort " and " non-effort " ..... about " something to achieve " or not to " achieve " ..... remind me the smile of a child.....enjoying the world......unconscious about the fact of " time and space " .....he/she need to advance through..... He is very clear about the fact that self-realization is not something to be achieved. He is absolutely clear about this. This is also absolutely clear in the message of Sri Nisargadatta. True, self realization is never achieved and this should never be the focus. Mind/ego is an illusion generator and will never generate the Truth, but it can question it's own illusion and seek the truth about it's own creations. The truth is that all of us here firmly believe that we are individual humans, in spite of all the concepts and experiences that tell us otherwise. If we didn't believe this, we would already be 'awake'. Challenging our own assumptions is not nearly as much fun as ego imagining it knows the Truth and is going to wake up any second, but we can ask ourselves if we're content just imagining or if we really want to know the Truth. Waking up isn't about destroying the dream or pretending the dream doesn't exist, it's about noticing the desperate clinging and finding the willingness to let go. Len There are all sorts of little ego trinkets to be collected along the spiritual path. If not for that, I don't spose anybody would even get close. Second prize is a much more gentle, peaceful life, and to me that alone is worth the effort. Phil
