Guest guest
P. George Steward and I have started a new list : MysticalPhisicalism . We invite you to join us and share your thoughts. Description When we investigate the Universe deeply enough we are confronted by emptiness, the vacuum, the void. Yet the mystery, wonder and awe remain. And it is at this mysterious border where physics, science, and the spiritual merge. If we walk to the end, both paths converge. Samsara is Nirvana; Heaven, is Earth. Then, we are back at the market place. It is this path, this convergence of the physical and the spiritual that we gather here to explore, question and investigate. Here is where people who for one reason or another are uncomfortable with many of the traditional interpretations of mystical understanding and experience, can meet and discuss such questions as:- To what extent can mysticism, particularly non-dual mysticism, be understood in plain, scientific terms without losing its traditional claim to bear truth of a deep, cosmic kind? Are the Idealist, Phenomenalist and Phenomenological philosophical turns so often found in traditional approaches to mysticism, particularly non-dual mysticism, necessary or integral to it, or can those traditional interpretations be ditched yet the resultant understanding remain authentically mystical, authentically non-dual? Can mystical experience or understanding in some sense stand in judgement over the scientific world-view, or is it the other way round, both, or neither? Is mystical experience merely a form of mental illness - perhaps a form of depersonalization, derealisation or schizophrenia - or is it actually a cognitive state of some kind? Is it possible to do one's mystical practices, rituals or experiments with a physicalist understanding of how they " work " , and if it's possible does it help or hinder one's mystical attainment? Do these questions even make any sense? Submit your ideas, question the thoughts of others in a spirit of friendship. This list is moderated and cordiality strongly suggested.
