Guest guest
For several years, on another list, I saw myself as having the job of being the " devil's advocate " . I have very strong feelings about preventing people from falling head first into a belief or a stroy about how things work. I would watch people as they fell into line with the dogma of some group or carismatic leader. I strongly beleive that there is no true story and that any story, if it can be communicated well, can serve as a finger pointing at the moon. The problem is that people usually fall in love with the finger and so never look at the moon... This is, I believe, because people want order and understanding so much that they willingly accepts lies that give them something to hold onto. This wish of mine to play the devil's advocate started when I left a cult know as scientology. I am mentioning the above because when I read a post on this list in which someone, denigrates the heart felt beliefs of another member, I sometimes am not sorry to read what he is saying. It is terrible to me to watch another be sucked into a patern of thinking or story about how and why things work as they do. So I like it when someone throws a wrench into the gears of a smoothly running set of lies... even when the lies point to a non verbal truth. An obsesion about a story that points to the truth, is still a destructive obsession. Also... mental chaos can sometimes give balance to mental order.
