Taking a stab at defining " I am " !

For me, at this point, who I really really really am is best pointed at by

using the words " amness " , or " isness " , no *I* or *me* involved at all. This

" am-ness " doesn't depend on " appearances " or " perceptions " or " sensations " to

*be*. There are no distinctions or qualities at all. It is *prior* to

formulating words, or concepts, or talking to " oneself " , or the body talking to

" itself " .

*I am* is NOT a statement made by thought, nor is *it* a thought. To say " I

am " is *secondary* to *being*. It comes " after the fact " of *being*. It is an

" effect " so to speak, a derivative. The " I am " being referred to here is prior

to both *is* and *is not* yet at the same time encompasses " both " by being

noneother than both yet neither as well. It is " no-thingness " , objectless,

qualitieslessness out of which, to which, and as a modification of which all

so-called " things " , objects, perceptions, sensations, qualities, experiences

occur in and as eternal ever bubbling nowness.

Words...they conceal as much as they reveal. Go figure! :-)

yes...

Nisargadatta:

" When pure awareness is attained, no need exists any more,

not even for 'I am', which is but a useful pointer, a

direction-indicator towards the Absolute. The awareness

'I am' then easily ceases. What prevails is that which

cannot be described, that which is beyond words. It is

this 'state' which is most real, a state of pure

potentiality, which is prior to everything. The 'I am'

and the universe are mere reflections of it. "

" I am " has a use as a pointer, as N indicates above.

To describe what is " beyond " ... there are so many

descriptions. Perhaps some will still use " I am " for

what is beyond " I am " , I don't know. That was my

original question. But as he says, it cannot be

described.

In any case, it is prior to formulating words,

as you say.
