How does one realize that a mirage will not quench their thrist? Seeing the mirage for what it is...........and what it isn't. You cannot take the path that Nisargadatta took. Each halucination is unique....... Scent the air....pet a puppy.....when you hug someone....be the last to let go...... Cultivate fearlessness. Walk peacefully through the mystery. Accept joyfully those things that occur naturally. Anticipate loving-kindness. Flow along with the thought stream......immersed in the clarity of unknowing. When you can.......lower your legs........stand up.....and look around. Be yourself. toombaru

But I can respond to the gist of your question: I take it you are asking how did knowing 'what is so' happen for me. It happened/happens/is spontaneously, of itself -- and isn't in the past, and isn't something I have, is not more here than there, not more mine than yours. And it didn't occur in spite of me, but because I tried and failed -- this simply is what remains when all that was apparently formed from my activity -- is not. To answer your earlier question, was this a boom or a subtle shift -- it shook things up, very much so -- disorientingly so, yet all reintegrated and continued on of itself, the events of my life falling into place -- an ordinary life of an ordinary person. The tendencies forming as me and my life continuing to work themselves out and through just as usual. You ask how did it affect my life -- deeply, but without changing anything. You ask how did it happen - just as the end of the movement of attempting, holding, and investing in/as a center, or as trying to get somewhere else or be some other way. A dissolution of the activity in trying to anticipate a next moment - yet still able to think and plan, with no problem. -- D.

Do you know of any such way? If not... talk of " realization " just remains mere 'talk', stories, speculation, mental dreams and fantasies. For all we know, Nisargadatta himself might have been mistaken, wrong or 'lying'. How do I know that Nisargadatta was " realized " ? My experience is that I don't know that. I can't know that and thus there is no real way to answer the question as the basic premise itself is not established. As far as 'meditation' is concerned – its effects are now being scientifically measured and its methods are well known. But, then... meditation is an ongoing process and there is no 'meditator' who is ever " done " ! If 'professional' 'gurus' like Adyashanti, Gangaji, Tolle, Katie, Ramesh, Kalkie, Sai Baba, Sailor Bob, Adi da let imaprtial, neutral scientists observe and examine their mental state, brain waves, heart rate in an objective way and on regular intervals - only then, we might have some " objective " way to know what " realization " is. Until then, it will remain just " talk " ... A " guy " fantasizing about 'altered state' of mind that he/she experiences from time to time without needing to take any drugs... or, an " intellectual " who has read many spiritual texts and has learned to talk in the same way. Can one FEEL that? Yes. Decidedly so. As for my 'realization' it is one of an ever-deeping Gratitude and Love for THIS IS All. GRATITUDE Have you ever stopped your car somewhere on the side of any road? Your breath is leaving you, your heart is barely beating, your life seems to be held in some wicked balance, and the sound in your throat is strangled, and the tears blind you and you cry like a baby and can't seem to catch your next breath and you wonder just how you are here in this place of Now, this Peace that holds you captive. This is that absolutely glorious exquisite moment you have been waiting for all your life. The earth and heaven have sprung a leak in you; it is a watershed experience, how could you have missed this all in your Before Life, this utter utterly unimaginable Beauty that is Living You. The Kindness of You. The Wonder of You. This Love of You. This Knowing of You. This Unspeakable Ecstacy that has ordained You and recognized itself in this one small small life. 7/12/05 ....what led up to this is a distant memory of someone I had yet to Be, an inordinate need to know I am not separate from 'God' a shift from outside in, a reversal of fortune ;-) a knowing of who the shift was and who the shift was not an inordinate desire to experience Oneness with All There Is; being willing to die to experience This. wanting to know what love is; to experience Love for All That Is, wanting All That Is to return my Love. 7th heaven, so to speak;-)

Until then, it will remain just " talk " ... It is my experience that I don't have a 'constant' mental state. I am neither always peaceful, nor always full of love, nor always perfectly happy! Sometimes I am as if in the state of deep dreamless sleep while awake, other times I am frantic. Sometimes I am even scared and holding onto my breath thinking that I don't 'consciously' breathe I might die. Sometimes I am very calm amidst what to others might feel like turmoil. Other times, I am fierce and very angry at what looks like small matter. Sometimes I am very present, very conscious, other times I am not. When I talk to others - they tell me that they too go through many states. When I look at many pictures of Ramana - he too doesn't look perfectly happy, clam in every picture of his. When I hear stories of gurus from their close associates - I hear the incidence to common human emotions that occur in other humans too. Based on this data, realization as in " always happy " or " always peaceful " looks false or at least 'not yet achieved by any human'. > > A " guy " fantasizing about 'altered state' of mind > that he/she experiences from time to time without > needing to take any drugs... > > or, > > an " intellectual " who has read many spiritual texts > and has learned to talk in the same way. >

If I ask someone what type of car they drove to get to this little village.......they will all say something quite different. You are searching for a method to attain something that exists only as a concept. I find no such distinctness at all. here there is just the open UN-distinctness of What Is. ever-open, ever new. so I don't like that term " real Self " as for " How did the false sense of self end? " there was a disindentification with the origination of thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings were seen to be arising of their own... and belonging to no one. apparently the false sense of self [the word 'false' is redundant there!] IS identification with the origination of thoughts and feelings. Bill Note: any " sense of self " is false, is illusion.
