Ma-Tzu (709-788) was one of the great early masters

of Chan (Zen) in China. Ma-Tzu studied under Nan-yueh,

a student of the great sixth ancestor of Chan, Hui Neng.

Whenever Ma-Tzu had time he would go to the meditation

hall and meditate. Somebody noticed this behaviour and

brought it before Master Nan-yueh. Nan-yueh went to

the hall to question Ma-Tzu:

What are you aiming at by sitting there in

meditation like that? What are you hoping to achieve?

Ma-Tzu replied: I want to become a buddha.

Upon hearing this the master picked up a ceramic tile and

frantically began rubbing it. A shocked Ma-Tzu, thinking that

the old man had lost his marbles, asked:

What are you doing?

Nan-yueh: I'm polishing the tile to make it into a mirror.

Ma-Tzu: How can you make a mirror by polishing a tile?

Nan-yueh: How can a sitting meditation make a buddha?

Indeed, a mirror reflects many things but the mirror itself doesn't

change.

s mirror on the ground reflects

clouds passing by, empty sky gives

flight to wings

step on the mirror,

shatter the glass

sunlight dancss in broken shards,

bleeding feet stain grass red,

touches neither the clouds nor the sky.

Gassho to a grasshopper.
