Advaita as such is about Sankara and Gaudapada and the Mandukya Upanishad. Much neo advaita is just really intellectual nondualism, or verbal non dualism. It can only rotate in the vortices of the mind in never ending circles unless the samskaras are removed by Sadhana....Dingo. --- End forwarded message ---
Guest guest
What Neo-Advaita gives in fact boils down to the seductive formula that " there is nothing you can do or need to do, all you have to know is that there is no one there. If you are knowing something, you are retaining it, which is a doing. If you speak spontaneously in a context as it presents, you will say what is adequate to the moment. You won't assume some formula (e.g., " there is no one here " ) is the adequate truth statement covering all moments. There isn't such a truth statement, never has been. The truth is what is, not what can be retained about it through a cognitive formula (including a formula like " the truth is what is. This is not like physics where a description of " reality " can be given. Your comments above *could* be read by someone as a description of " the way it is " . So it is important to be careful not to mislead. This realm of discussion is what in Buddhism is called " skill in means " . There is no one way, there is no right/wrong when it comes to skill in means. When you say, " One has to... " that is not absolute. There are many many approaches. " > > What have you to day to B's recommendation? > > Bill Well, first of all, it all depends on the situation, and on A and where A is coming from, and on B and B's relationship with A, and maybe even on X and who X is. So, by taking the words out of context and making a pronouncement about them, I am making a mistake. Having said that -- if I were A, I might feel like B hadn't really listened to me, just offered me some kind of generic advice. I might feel that this is more to A's benefit than to mine. B rushed quickly to give me an instruction -- and receiving an instruction that hasn't been asked for often comes across as a way of distancing, maybe even a kind of superiority placing the recipient one-down. If B were simple and direct in a way that let me know that B heard -- I might like that. " Wow, yeah -- you look distressed, " perhaps. Or .... " would you like to tell me more about it? " maybe. Or maybe some commiseration, like, " Yes, I know X and X has distressed me at times, as well. " If B were a Zen monk, maybe B would turn around and walk away. And if A were into Zen, maybe B's response would be perfect. But I'm not into Zen that much. ;-) -- D.
