When The Night Catches Me

When the night catches me,

In the cold bleakness of another dark reality,

When old friends come to visit, awaken me with

The pounding of my heart, I imagine

The sullen loneliness of a hermit not yet willing

To pack her begging bowl and return to the dust

And noise of the maddening crowd, the cityscape

With its fumes and horns, laughing at myself,

I am assaulted by my own quiet rage, I walk on by,

I see in hollow faces etched the same sullen loneliness,

Though I remember how gulls

Fly in the midst of all the oncoming treachery,

I have bitten into the apple of despair, so

Brightly covered in the mystery of red, of the bottomless

Fear that rises like waves in my blood, restless and yearning

I step out of myself, crashing on yet another shore, dragging

My broken wing and choking at my last bite.

It is daybreak now.

YIL,

Ana
