He was touched by an angel as much as by madness.....and even after leaving (being booted) the group in '68....he still was 'The Man' in my eyes.......and always a friend to all. In tribute, I post the below.........and one more thing......I ALWAYS find I get a contact high, whenever I come in contact with some righteous weed......preferably B.C. .....sorta like my Grey poupon preference in mustards. ;-)) .........bob By " Little " Steven Van Zandt NEW YORK (Billboard) - Syd Barrett was the second-most-famous drug casualty after Brian Jones. Both were fired from the bands they started. Brian died a few weeks after the Rolling Stones expelled him in 1969. Syd lasted until July 7, spending almost two-thirds of his life in sickly seclusion. Even with Jimi, Janis, Jim Morrison and Brian dying, somehow Syd living to see the massive success of Pink Floyd seemed all the more tragic. Floyd's first record, " The Piper at the Gates of Dawn " in 1967, was all Syd. It was both sophisticated and surprisingly visionary for a band playing American R & B just like everyone else only a year or two earlier, establishing an artistic and adventurous template for the entire British psychedelic era. It is not surprising to hear it was recorded next door, virtually simultaneously with, to the Beatles' " Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. " Silent since the mid-'70s, most fans thought Syd had gone a long time ago. Some fates are worse than death. (Van Zandt, a founding member of the E Street Band, hosts the syndicated radio show " Little Steven's Underground Garage. " ) Reuters/Billboard P.S....Syd had recently turned 60 years.........what a beautiful age! If you listen to the midnight winds, you can still hear him composing such wonderful tintinnabulations as to ring your soul with shivers of delight! How's it in your neck of the woods?? hey Ana.....yeah them brain cells...but what a way for them to go eh! Loved " Contact " ! I even let the SETI program use some spare computer memory on the old PC here.....anyone can, visit their web site and get hooked up to help contact ET....I'm looking over the Lake right now, and I can see Ohio is as overcast and drizzly, as it is here on the North Shore of old Erie(Western Basin)..as said it's just a pitter patter right now, but the beach flag windsock is blowin' on shore (winds from the South), so if you now have RAIN.....it's most likely on it's way over here..'bout 35-40 mile drift across the blue.......WOW....what a neat day to get out the copy of " CONTACT " and veg to Carl's tale......thanks for the heads up on the weather and the flick! :-) .......bobby
