You want nothing, neither from your body nor from your mind.

I think some very good points were offered in > surya's piece on samadhi. That piece expresses a fundamentally different view, as when it says, " Samadhi means the association [of the individual] with God. " The material takes the view that samadhi is a " state " that can be attained. Such is a fundamentally different notion of samadhi altogether. > > I understand what you write here but I do not agree > there is no method in the Nisargadatta quote. One can certainly *read a method into* the Nisargadatta quote. I am sure you can see a method there if you are wont to do so. Here is Ramana Maharshi on samadhi: Q: What is dhyana [meditation]? A: It is abiding as one's Self without swerving in any way from one's real nature and without feeling that one is meditating. Q: What is the difference between dhyana and samadhi? A: Dhyana is achieved through deliberate mental effort. In samadhi there is no such effort. So you could (if inclined) see what you regard as " method " in the Nisargadatta quote as akin to dhyana above. > At this > time the way I see it to *not* do is as much a method > as is to do, absolutely > or to *believe* that one can do is > perhaps a better way to express. One " method " is the practice of " witnessing " . In the practice of witnessing one does not interfere in the movement of thought, attention, etc. but just observes. What the practice of witnessing can do is demonstrate that even though there is no active involvement in the thinking, the movement of attention, etc., those processes go on of their own accord. It can then come to be seen that thinking, the movement of attention, etc. are not activities that *one does*. The illusion is that one is *doing* anything. Everything happens of its own. > Perhaps you will explain to me how the 'attainer' > perishes? Really it is not that anything actually goes away, but that there is a shift in interpretation, along the lines of the witnessing example above. By deep inquiry, keen attention to what is in the moment etc. the grip of the belief that one is *doing* can be seen through and then eventually eliminated from the myriad habit patterns in which that assumption is tacitly embedded.
