Guest guest
Fuke (P'u-hua) and Rinsai were having dinner at the house of a lay follower, Rinsai lifted a grain of rice with his chop sticks and exclaimed " Behold mount Sumeru. How could this miracle come about? " Fuke overturned Rinsai's table, and the food landed on Rinsai's lap. " What a rude fellow. Was that necessary? " asked Rinsai. " If eating is not enough, then wear your food, " replied Fuke " Next day, while they were eating together, Rinsai asked, " What's the difference between last night and now? " Fuke darted forward to overturn the table, but Rinsai lifted his rice bowl first, and yelled, " Behold mount mount Sumeru! " P: Who was ruder, Rinsai for bringing up Zen while eating, or Fuke? Who was wiser, Fuke for pointing out that rice is always rice, and eating, is always eating, or Rinsai by pointing out that Fuke's insistence in seeing rice as just rice was no more real than seeing rice as mount Sumeru? Walking a tightrope your feet are your eyes, and thoughts your blindfold. Pete

The owl speaks kindly To the night air, Shooting stars pass this way but once, The lonesome moon knows this. And the rain falls come what may.
