Guest guest
Individual ants are very dumb, but an ant colony is very smart. An ant colony is like a city state. It has soldiers, workers, and a queen, but no priests. See, smart! There is a species of ants that discovered that some tree resins kill bacteria. How could ants figure that one out? Some say by chance. Suppose, they never intended to bring the resin home, but only the bugs trap in crystalized resin, and little by little they acquired a test for resin. Still, how can chance explain so many dumb bugs acting so intelligently in so many different ways? Their societies work better than ours. True, they have been at it for more than 100 million years, but still it seems there is a hidden guiding hand here. Maybe we should rethink intelligence. Maybe it doesn't need thought, nor choice, nor consciousness. Maybe it's something more primal, maybe even something inorganic, blind, and yet unerring.
