KARMA AND REBIRTH:

The theory of Karma and rebirth occupy a very significant place in

Hindu philosophy. It serves as the most satisfactory solution to the

numerous complex problems that arise out of the seemingly unjustified

suffering.

According to our scriptures the law of cause and effect operates as

inviolably in the moral and spiritual planes as in the physical plane.

In both the planes every action produces a reaction equal in force and

opposite in direction. No deed disappears into the oblivion without

leaving its consequences and no consequence can there be without a

causal antecedent to it. Thus in the spiritual field, virtuous deeds

are rewarded with fortune and vicious ones with misery.

In the world of spirit every action may not produce its reaction as

quickly as in the physical world. Some times even a life span may not

be sufficient to bring about the appropriate result of an effort, but

some times or other it is bound to, according to the inexorable law of

Karma. In such cases it becomes necessary for an individual to take

another birth to reap the good or bad consequences of the deeds of his

previous birth. Thus the theory of Karma logically leads to the theory

of reincarnation of the individual.

An individual's deeds of the present life shape his fortunes or

misfortunes of the next life. And since there is generally a wide

disparity in the nature of the acts done by the different individuals

in one birth, it is inevitable for their fortunes also to be uneven in

their subsequent births. Such inequalities produce various types of

effects on the other parties affected by them, who again in their

turn, similarly give rise to numerous consequences of different hues

and complexities. Thus a single act in one birth of an individual

enters into an unending chain of permutations and combinations with

like acts of others causing thereby a very complicated variety of

hybrid Karmas and their corresponding breeds of rebirths.

3. SAI IN DREAMS:

http://www.ettitudemedia.com

These are the dream sequences and messages as received by SaiBaNiSaji

From our beloved GURU LORD SAINATH OF SHIRIDI. In Anticipation that

this feature will help in one's spiritual growth are hereby compiled

from his personal Diary and presented to SAIBANDHUS.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY.

Sai is bestowing everything wanted by his devotees and what is that he

is expecting in return was my query for the night. Sai promptly

replied with the visuals as-

-To shun the luxuries and adopt simple living.

-Not to try imitating the living styles of the well to do class of people.

-To keep aloof from those engaged in deceit.

-Not to accept bribes.

-Avoid entering politics. Bury the past ills.

-Never collect money from friends in the name of Sai.

Life should be lived with a purpose in a befitting manner.

06-12-1994

Some of my friends were discussing about vaastu and were of the

opinion that one should sleep with head towards south direction. Sri

Sai never slept with head pointing southwards. As stated in Sai

Satcharitra, Baba, Thathya and Mahilsapathi slept in Dwarakamayi with

their heads pointing towards East, West and North directions. Why did

Baba avoid the South direction? Baba presented with the visual-

I was walking on a road and came to a junction of cross roads,

leading into four geographical directions. Only three of the roads

were worthy and the fourth one in the southern direction had a wall

constructed with inscription- " For those intending to take the

spiritual path- this road is a difficult one " . As I got up from sleep,

I realized that sleeping with head southwards, will tune our minds

more towards the materialistic World and the dreams emanating also aid

accordingly. It is therefore difficult to advance spiritually with

such thoughts reeling around. Thus I understood the significance of

observing the directions in sleep.

Certain guide- lines are set by Shastras to benefit of all.

4. QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

" Shashi " : shashi_31

26. Mind Alone Is Held Responsible For the Bondage & Emancipation

Human mind cannot be called an individual `in toto'. Human mind is

merely a component of every individual. Every individual registers in

his mind all the events that occur from time to time. Thus human mind

acts as a store house for all the events noticed by him. Due to

memory, every person is able to remember and recollect all the

previous events which were already registered in his mind. Thus, it is

the consciousness which illumines his mind. Every person's

consciousness is the space inside Self (Atman). In other words it is

entirely due to the presence of Self (Atman) that every Peron's mind

functions. Every individual is the mountain of consciousness. Just

like the area occupied by an ocean remains neither increasing nor

decreasing after a storm, human consciousness also remains without

undergoing modifications. Now it is clear that human mind constantly

undergoes modifications.

It is also thru that the individual's mind will disappear after death.

After the death of an individual, his physical body will also

disappear. But the individual Self (Atman) remains as before. Atman is

a permanent substratum upon which all objects are super imposed. Being

finite, it is the individual's mind, either out of Ego or Ajnana must

invariably undergo modifications.

ALLAHABAD, INDIA, JANUARY 14, 2007: Braving biting cold, more than

four million devotees took a holy dip in the sacred waters of Sangam,

the confluence of holy river Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati on

the occasion of Makar Sankranti in Ardh Kumbh. Makar Sankranti, the

day when the sun enters into Capricorn, is an auspicious festival for

Hindus who take holy dip in the river Ganga. The festival will be

celebrated for two days. About 3.5 million more pilgrims are expected

to take bath till Monday. Makar Sankranti would also be marked as the

first of the four Shahi Snans (Royal Bath) during the month-long Ardh

Kumbh mela -- Mauni Amvaasya (Jan 19), Basant Panchami (Jan 23) and

Mahasivratri (Feb 15).

The devotees started coming to the mela area since early morning and

the bathing will continue untill evening. As many as 32 bathing ghats

have been set up by the Mela administration for pilgrims drawn from

every nook and corner of India. Elaborate security arrangements had

been made in and around Mela area in view of the apprehension of a

terrorist strike during the Mela. Over 90 million pilgrims are

expected to visit Mela which commenced on 3 January 3 to be concluded

on February 16, Mahashivratri day. The bathing was conducted smoothly

and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the Mela area,

the Mela Officer Pragyan Ram Mishra and Senior Superintendent of

Police (SSP) Rajiv Sabharwal said.

----------------------------

From SaiSatcharitra Chapter 28

On one Makar-Sankranti day, Megha wanted to besmear the body of Baba

with sandal-paste and bathe Him with Ganges water. Baba was first

unwilling to undergo this operation, but at his repeated requests, He

consented. Megha had to traverse a distance of eight koss (going and

returning) to bring the sacred water from the Gomati River.

MAKARA SHANKRANTI

The Sanskrit term " Shankramana " means " to begin to move " . The day on

which the sun begins to move northwards is called Makara Shankranti.

It usually falls in the middle of January. in South India this

festival is called the Pongal.

... It is closely connected with agriculture. To the agriculturalist,

it is a day of triumph. He would have by then brought home the fruits

of his patient toil. Symbolically, the first harvest is offered to the

Almighty—and that is Pongal. To toil was his task, his duty, but the

fruit is now offered to the Lord. This is the spirit of Karma Yoga.

The master is not allowed to grab all the harvest for himself either.

Pongal is the festival during which the landlord distributes food,

clothes and money among the labourers who work for him. What a noble

act! It is an ideal you should constantly keep before you, not only

ceremoniously on the Pongal day, but at all times.

Be charitable. Be generous. Treat your servants as your bosom-friends

and brother workers. This is the keynote of the Pongal festival. You

will then earn their loyalty and enduring love.

The day prior to the Makara Shankranti is called the Bhogi festival.

On this day, old, worn-out and dirty things are discarded and burnt.

Homes are cleaned and white-washed and lovely designs are drawn with

rice-flour on the door front. The roads are swept clean.

These practices have their own significance from the point of view of

health. But, here I remind you that it will not do to attend to these

external things alone. Cleaning the mind of its old dirty habits of

thought and feeling is more urgently needed. Burn them up, with a wise

and firm resolve to tread the path of truth, love and purity from this

holy day onwards. This is the significance of Pongal in the life of

the spiritual aspirant.

If you do this, then the Makara Shankranti has a special significance

for you. The sun, symbolizing wisdom, divine knowledge and spiritual

light, which receded from you when you traveled in the darkness of

ignorance, delusion and sensuality, now joyously turns on its

northward course and moves towards you to shed its light and warmth in

greater abundance, and to infuse into you more life and energy.

In fact, the sun itself symbolizes all that the Pongal festival stands

for. The message of the sun is the message of light, the message of

unity, of impartiality, of true selflessness, of the perfection of the

elements of Karma Yoga. The sun shines on all equally. It is the true

benefactor of all beings. Without the sun, life would perish on earth.

It is extremely regular and punctual in its duties, and never claims a

reward or craves for recognition. If you imbibe these virtues of the

sun, what doubt is there that you will shine with equal divine luster!

He who dwells in the sun, whom the sun does not know, whose body the

sun is, and by whose power the sun shines—He is the Supreme Self, the

indweller, the immortal Essence. Tat Twam Asi— " That thou art " . Realize

this and be free here and now on this holy Pongal or Makara Shankranti

day. This is my humble Pongal prayer to you all.

Special prayers are offered in temples and homes. Then the people of

the household gather together and partake of the offerings in an

atmosphere of love and festivity.

There is family re-union in all homes. Brothers renew their contacts

with their married sisters by giving them presents.

The landlord greets the farmer lovingly and gives him gifts of grain,

clothes and money.

Both these days, which are family re-union days, are regarded as being

inauspicious for travel. This is to prevent us from going away from

home on such days.

When you celebrate the Shankranti or Pongal in this manner, your sense

of value changes. You begin to understand that your real wealth is the

goodwill and friendship of your relatives, friends, neighbours and

servants. Your wealth is the land on which your food grows, the cattle

which help you in agriculture, and the cow which gives you milk. You

begin to have greater love and respect for them and for all living

beings—the crows, the fish and all other creatures.

In Maharashtra and in North India, devotees of the Lord attach great

importance to Makara Shankranti. It is the season chosen by the Guru

for bestowing his Grace on the disciple. In the South, too, it should

be noted that it was about this time that Mahadeva favored several of

the Rishis by blessing them with His beatific vision.

6. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

Shree Sainathaya namah –part TWO

Push Sumo around for more than ½ a km before we reached the nearest

petrol pump. The only option that we had….. While I was pushing the

jeep I never thought that I am to receive the shock of my life at the

pump. The pump closed around ½ hour earlier as was told to us by the

watchman guarding the pump. Now there was nothing to do except run

thought horses as fast as you could trying to find some way or other

to get some mode of transportation which would help us reach the

airport safely. It was a night with no one around except dogs barking

to keep us company. We thought of asking some vehicle to stop and give

us a lift to where? AIRPORT …who would be leaving for airport at this

hour from this town. Money was not a consideration at that critical

juncture but it was the time factor that was important.

Meanwhile my wife knew a lady from my kid's Kindergarten class where

my kid used to study. She just sort of knew them as the lady's

daughter and my kid were in the same class. So they became friends

waiting for the kids outside the classroom. She dialed her number from

her cell phone .The lady came from an influential family and they had

some chauffeur driven vehicles at their service .I was very skeptical

about the call. Why on earth would someone so influential send their

driver in the middle of the night when there was hardly any relation

between the two families. It's akin to asking for help from a total

stranger. I was thinking of abandoning the trip when all of a sudden I

saw my wife's facial expression changed .She said the driver was on

his way to accompany us. This moment I again reaffirmed my faith in HIM.

Meanwhile out of nowhere a jeep came in which was going back to the

Ghatkopar (15 Kms away from the airport). That guy said that he would

drop us at the airport but his jeep was not big enough to carry all of

the members with our 6 bags. So somebody would have to opt out which

was not a good sign either. I was fortunate enough that we never had

to make a call on that matter as the the Qualis came in around 12

minutes. To my dismay it was not the driver but the husband of the

lady herself at the steering .This was more then I could ask for. We

loaded the bags in the Qualis and the other jeep and started the

journey. My wife introduced me to him and thus started our one and

half hour journey from my place to the airport. The lady's hubby was

himself surprised as to how did he keep the phone in the bedroom that

night as he never ever keeps the phone by his bed in the night. He

said that he receives around 3 dozen calls all day and the last thing

that he would want to do is to take calls at night. The phone's always

on vibrator mode in the hall where no one receives calls in the night.

Now this guy's not someone who is a commoner .They are builders of

repute. They normally don't entertain everybody or anybody. He himself

personally came to leave us to our destination was itself something

that I was pondering. Everything went well after that and we cruised

through the Qualis in around 50 minutes to the airport. The other jeep

guy was a sober .He did not take advantage of us and took a decent

amount and left before I could even thank him.

At the airport the Qualis gentleman took our leave .While swerving the

vehicle around I personally went to thank him .All of a sudden this

man's persona changed .He looked straight in my eyes and without any

expression of joy or regret said to me `muzhe toh aapko chhodne ke

liye aana hi tha.' This translates into `I had to come to bid adieu to

you'. His expression was such that I could not describe in words but

as I am writing this I could feel my eyes moisten and hair on my hand

and back stand up. It was as if I had a brush with HIM. And then he

did not look back and just drove away leaving me to think is this

happening for real.

Later while we were waiting on tarmac for take off my wife mentioned

to me that the lady's house owns a temple of Dutta Guru and that the

lady's husband performs pooja in the temple daily. Sai Baba is

considered as an incarnation of the same deity.

So that completes the whole circle.

7. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with

children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting

Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Now I want to tell

the stories what heard in my child hood.

Story of a Little Mouse:

Long, long ago, once there was an ashram of a great holy Rishi on the

bank of the Ganga. He lived there with his wife and innumerable

disciples. One day the Rishi was saying his prayers on the Ganga bank

when suddenly a small female mouse fell over him. It had, by chance,

slipped from the claws of hawk, which was carrying it. It was a cute

-looking bright-eyed she-mouse. The Rishi took pity on it and changed

it into a beautiful girl-child by the power of his mantras. Then he

took the girl to his ashram and gave her to his wife. He told her " You

always wanted a child. Here is our daughter. Raise her as lovingly as

you can " .

The wife was overjoyed at this. She said, " I will bring her up as

a fairy princess " . After some years the girl grew up into a young

woman. She was very beautiful. Now the Rishi and his wife started

thinking about her marriage. He wanted that his daughter should get

the best husband. After some thought he decided that the Sun would be

a suitable husband for her. So he summoned the sun with his mantra-

power. The sun came down to him and asked him why he was called. The

Rishi replied that he wanted to marry his daughter to him.

The Girl was standing beside her father. Before the sun could say

anything, she cried out, " I will not marry him. He is so fiery. I want

a better husband than him " .

The Rishi was very sad at this. However, he asked the Sun, " Is there

anybody greater than you? " The Sun said, " Yes there is. The cloud is

greater than me. When he comes before me, my brightness gets hidden. "

So the Rishi called the Cloud. At his call the Cloud came down to him

and asked him whey he had called him. The girl did not let the Rishi

speak and spoke out, " No, I can not marry this dark, shapeless and

fearsome cloud. I want a husband greater even than him. "

So the Rishi asked the Cloud if there was any one greater than he was.

The Cloud replied that the Wind was more powerful than he was. He

could make the cloud run anywhere and the cloud could not do anything.

The Rishi used his mantra -power again and summoned the wind. The wind

came down to him and bowing before him said, " Why have you called me? "

" I want to marry my daughter to you, " said he.

But the girl interrupted them in the middle saying that she could not

marry the restless wind who could not stay still for even a moment.

She wanted someone greater than him. So the Rishi once again had to

ask the same question to the Wind, " Who is greater than you? " The wind

said, " The Mountain is much greater than I am. He is tall and

powerful. I can not move him nor can I cross over him. "

At this the Rishi called the Mountain. The Mountain immediately came

to the Rishi. But when the girl saw him, she expressed her

dissatisfaction and said, " He is so big and shapeless. I want a

husband who is greater and better - looking than he is. " So the Rishi

repeated his question to the Mountain, " Who is greater than you? The

Mountain said, " The Mouse is more powerful than I am. No doubt, I am

big and powerful and hard. But the Mouse, despite being small, can dig

a hole through me. "

The Rishi called the Mouse. He took no time in reaching the place

where the Rishi and his daughter were standing. When the girl saw him,

she was overjoyed. She said, " Father, I want him. " I shall marry him

and live for ever with him. " Her inborn nature had asserted it self.

She was naturally drawn to him.

So the Rishi changed his daughter again into a mouse and married her

to the Mouse.

Learn from your parents the moral of the story - bye children meet in

the next issue.

An individual's deeds of the present life shape his fortunes or
