DETACHMENT

Devotion is better than knowledge and desire less action is better

than devotion

We can reap the wished for harvest of our aim through prayer with

perfect concentration. But the moot point is that normally we cannot

marshal such powers of concentration to produce the required result

because of the limitations of the kind of life we are used to in the

modern world.

But there is a way out. We can worship God in an almost equally

efficacious way which is by trying to adopt His qualities in our own

character and conduct. Imitation is indirect worship. The Absolute is

omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, infinite in dimensions and

eternal in longevity. These are all breath taking attributes for us to

cultivate and remain fantasies of a wish land to remodel our character

on their basis.

There is, however, a quality of the Absolute, which can and also

should, be practiced by ordinary mortals like us, if we aim at

salvation. Though the Paramatma (almighty).is the sole motive force

behind all the activity of the universe, He always remains in the

background as a most disinterested spectator of the whole drama. His

mere presence animates the universe into activity but He does not at

all take any active part in it.

That is not an inimitable trait in Him and we can acquire it as a part

of our nature and adopt it in our daily movements in the world. For

that we should look at everything we come across in our lives

dispassionately and do any work for its own sake, as a matter of duty

but not wishing for the fruit of that effort. Just as a number of the

audience is not personally affected by the fortunes or misfortunes of

the characters on the stage, so too a spectator like attitude towards

any work we execute, does not involve us in the clutches of Karma.

If we do so we reach God through another path, an alternative to

prayer with full concentration. All our sacred scriptures too assert

in unequivocal terms that detachment creates no Karma and that,

therefore, there will be no rebirth.

2. SAI'S NEWS FROM THE TIME MACHINE:

February 22, 1914: A Sadhak of Yoga (Swami Ram Baba) visited Shirdi

and seeing Baba eating Roti with onion got suspicious and

disappointed. However Baba proved His power of Omniscience by reading

his mind and the Sadhak returned highly satisfied and blessed

3. SAI IN DREAMS:

http://www.ettitudemedia.com

These are the dream sequences and messages as received by SaiBaNiSaji

From our beloved GURU LORD SAINATH OF SHIRIDI. In Anticipation that

this feature will help in one's spiritual growth are hereby compiled

from his personal Diary and presented to SAIBANDHUS.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY.

26-12-1994

Yesterday's prayer was to request Sai to extend a helping hand always

towards me. Sai appeared in the form of a fruit vendor and said-

" You do good bargain and give me the correct price. Why should I

deceive you. " ? With this Sai conveyed that once we give HIM the coins

of Shraddha and Saburi, the fruits received would be certainly

matching the devotion.

Place the trust and do the best, for rest to follow.

28-12-1994

I prayed Lord Sai to grant me with the mindset to read Sai Satcharita

as a matter of routine. The visual invoked a big surprise for me-

I was standing in front of the sea watching the horizon and desired to

run towards the sea till my last breath. Then an unknown person came

and said that this piece of camphor will give you the desired power to

run till the end. Keep it on your head and start running. But

remember, the day the camphor totally sublimes into air; the run will

come to an end. What a wonderful way to grant permission.

Good decisions are always encouraged.

4. QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

" Shashi " : shashi_31

27. Maya

The word Maya doesn't mean unreal or false but that power which is

capable of producing wonderful effects. Prakruti also is capable of

creating wonderful effects. The word Maya refers to Prakruti which is

the cause of this creation, because God passes the power and not

because of ignorance on His part. It is the Jiva that is bound by this

Maya. Maya is said to have three Gunas and therefore refers to

Prakruti. Maya is neither unreal nor real.

Just as there are degrees in reality when we consider the extent of

respect or reverence paid to the King, his deputy, and his peon, we

find similarly that there are three grades of persons. The person in

the `Paramartika Stage' sees Truth as Truth and acts without observing

differentiation. The next is the person in the `Vyavaharika Stage' who

goes on differentiating the former. Thirdly, there is the person in

the `Pratibhasica Stage' who does not see the truth either entirely as

it is, or with the addition of differentiation merely but sees it

quite inverted i.e. seeing the good as evil and evil as good. Atman or

Brahman is common to all the three.

How can we see Maya? It is the indivisible but in fact we can note

down the Maya in different ways. `Akasa' though illimitable is the

same either in a big pot or in a small pot. It is only in degrees.

Just like that Brahman appears in different forms in this world, which

is the play of Maya. It is the union of Brahman with Maya that causes

Brahmananda, the Universe.

Maya covers up Brahman and produces worldly appearances. In reality,

the world does not exist. Only one real exists, but these appearances

are taken to be real. That causes the mischief. So we must kick out

Maya and regain Chaitanya. We must remove impurity of Maya from these

worldly appearances. By this constant thought, we will realize as

ourselves and become Mukta in this life only.

5. SANATANA DHARMA & SHRI SHIRDI SAIBABA

Megha began to look upon Sai Baba as an incarnation of Shiva. In order

to worship Shiva, bela leaves are required and Megha used to go miles

and miles every day to bring them and worship his Shiva (Baba) -Shri

SaiSatcharitraChapter XXVIII

Shivaratri

This falls on the 13th (or 14th) day of the dark half of Phalgun

(February-March). The name means " the night of Shiva " . The ceremonies

take place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honor of

Lord Shiva. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day.

People observe a strict fast on this day. Some devotees do not even

take a drop of water. They keep vigil all night. The Shiva Lingam is

worshipped throughout the night by washing it every three hours with

milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc., whilst the chanting of the Mantra

Om Namah Shivaya continues. Offerings of bael leaves are made to the

Lingam. Bael leaves are very sacred as, it is said, Lakshmi resides in

them.

Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, such as the Shiva Mahimna Stotra of

Pushpadanta or Ravana's Shiva Tandava Stotra are sung with great

fervour and devotion. People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra, Om Namah

Shivaya. He, who utters the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with

perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches

the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the

wheel of births and deaths. Many pilgrims flock to the places where

there are Shiva temples.

The Story of King Chitrabhanu

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on the

bed of arrows and discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of

Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu. The story goes as follows.

Once upon a time King Chitrabhanu of the Ikshvaku dynasty, who ruled

over the whole of Jambudvipa, was observing a fast with his wife, it

being the day of Maha Shivaratri. The sage Ashtavakra came on a visit

to the court of the king.

The sage asked, " O king! why are you observing a fast today? "

King Chitrabhanu explained why. He had the gift of remembering the

incidents of his previous birth.

The king said to the sage: " In my past birth I was a hunter in

Varanasi. My name was Suswara. My livelihood was to kill and sell

birds and animals. One day I was roaming the forests in search of

animals. I was overtaken by the darkness of night. Unable to return

home, I climbed a tree for shelter. It happened to be a bael tree. I

had shot a deer that day but I had no time to take it home. I bundled

it up and tied it to a branch on the tree. As I was tormented by

hunger and thirst, I kept awake throughout the night. I shed profuse

tears when I thought of my poor wife and children who were starving

and anxiously awaiting my return. To pass away the time that night I

engaged myself in plucking the bael leaves and dropping them down onto

the ground.

" The day dawned. I returned home and sold the deer. I bought some food

for myself and for my family. I was about to break my fast when a

stranger came to me, begging for food. I served him first and then

took my food.

" At the time of death, I saw two messengers of Lord Shiva. They were

sent down to conduct my soul to the abode of Lord Shiva. I learnt then

for the first time of the great merit I had earned by the unconscious

worship of Lord Shiva during the night of Shivaratri. They told me

that there was a Lingam at the bottom of the tree. The leaves I

dropped fell on the Lingam. My tears which I had shed out of pure

sorrow for my family fell onto the Lingam and washed it. And I had

fasted all day and all night. Thus did I unconsciously worship the

Lord. " I lived in the abode of the Lord and enjoyed divine bliss for

long ages. I am now reborn as Chitrabhanu. "

Lord Shiva's Assuarance

When creation had been completed, Shiva and Parvati went out to live

on the top of Mount Kailas. Parvati asked, " O venerable Lord! which of

the many rituals observed in Thy honour doth please Thee most? "

The Lord replied, " The 14th night of the new moon, in the dark

fortnight during the month of Phalgun, is my most favorite day. It is

known as Shivaratri. My devotees give me greater happiness by mere

fasting than by ceremonial baths and offerings of flowers, sweets and

incense.

" The devotee observes strict spiritual discipline in the day and

worships Me in four different forms during each of the four successive

three-hour periods of the night. The offering of a few bael leaves is

more precious to Me than the precious jewels and flowers. My devotee

should bathe Me in milk at the first period, in curd at the second, in

clarified butter at the third, and in honey at the fourth and last.

Next morning, he should feed the Brahmins first and, after performing

the prescribed ceremonies, he can break his fast. O Parvati! there is

no ritual which can compare with this simple routine in sanctity. "

Parvati was deeply impressed by the speech of Lord Shiva. She repeated

it to Her friends who in their turn passed it on to the ruling princes

on earth. Thus was the sanctity of Shivaratri broadcast all over the

world.

NEWS FROM ABROD

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, February 6, 2007: Over a million Hindus

fulfilled their vows and worshipped Lord Muruga at the Sri Subramanian

Swamy Temple in Batu Caves yesterday. This year's Thaipusam festival,

like many others before, also saw devotees carrying pots of milk,

kavadis, or with their bodies pierced, making their way up the steps

to the temple. The throbbing chant of 'Vel, Vel, Vel' filled the air

as devotees climbed the 272 crowded steps to the cave temple. Even

more stunning was the sight of those bearing huge and elaborate

kavadis, walking patiently up to fulfill their vows and show their

piety to Lord Muruga. This year's Thaipusam was one of the grandest

ever, with an estimated 1.3 million visitors and devotees yesterday

afternoon. Sukhveen Singh Ajay, 21, an annual kavadi bearer, said

determination was important to participate as a devotee during the

festival. " I have been taking the kavadi for the past five years and

will continue for another seven years to fulfill my vow, " said

Sukhveen. He also said that discipline was vital for all devotees, in

terms of keeping the mind, body and soul pure, to engage in the

prayers and 48 days of fasting before the festival. Besides the

devotees, foreign visitors were also awestruck by the sheer scale of

the festival.

SINGAPORE, February 2, 2007: Hindus in Singapore celebrated the annual

festival of Thaipusam on Thursday in honor of Lord Subrahmanya (also

known as Lord Murugan) who represents virtue, youth and power to

Hindus and is the destroyer of evil. It is the statue of Lord

Subrahmanya that is decorated with jewels and finery on the first day

before Thaipusam and together with his two consorts, Valli and

Devayani, is placed on a chariot and brought in procession. The

ceremony starts in the early hours of the morning when the first group

of devotees of Lord Subrahmanya carrying milk pots leave Sri Srinvasa

Perumal Temple for Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, where the milk is

offered to the Deity of Lord Subrahmanya. The festival also sees a

spectacular two and a half mile procession by devotees from the Sri

Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Serangoon Road to the Layan Sithi

Vinayagar Temple at Keong Siak Road.

6. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

SaiRam!

I am a devotee of Shirdi Sai. I want to share my experience with Sai

devotees. Once I had a dream. That was first time when I saw Sai. The

dream was like this. I was sleeping. Suddenly my mother-in-law called

me saying Sai is in our Balcony. I was thrilled and ran out to see

Sai. His back was towards me. When he heard my Voice. He turned to me

and suddenly there was light around him and he grew big. This was

only for a second. again he became normal. That was the dream. After

this dream there was lot of change in me. After that there were so

many miracles.

I believe lord SaiBaba a lot. He is one and only God whom I always

pray in need. I believe that I am nothing without SaiBaba. It so

happened that, once I resigned my job as I was not getting time to

attend any other interviews. I started searching for the job at that

time.

As software market was down at that time, there were no jobs. After

trying for 2-3 months, I started fearing about my future without the

job. In such a situation, I prayed SaiBaba to help me in getting the

job. I have also read Sai Satcharita book for one time and wrote Sai

namam " Om Sai Ram " one thousand times. After completing the book, I

saw a job opening in news paper and I applied for it. I have to write

a written exam for it. When I went to write the exam, there were 2000

people waiting to write that exam.

By seeing that many number of people, I lost my hopes on the job.

However, somehow I attended the exam. The exam paper was too tough.

I started answering the unknown question by taking the name of SaiBaba

and submitted the paper. They said, I will get a call if I selected

in the exam. But, I left everything on SaiBaba. One week later I

received a call that I got selected in the exam and there will be

other rounds of interviews. It was a miracle of SaiBaba that I got

selected in the exam. All the credit goes to Saibaba. He is always

there with me. He listens to everyone who believes in him and

protects them. Later, I was selected in all the rounds of interview

and also got the offer letter on the same day. Believe in SaiBaba.

Trust him. He was with you. He is with you. He will be with you.

7. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with

children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting

Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Now I want to tell

the stories what heard in my child hood.

The Crow and the Serpent:

Once a pair of crows built a nest on a big banyan tree. They lived

there in a great happiness. One day a black serpent took shelter under

the tree. He started living there in a hole. The crows did not like

this but they could not do anything. After some time the female crow

laid eggs. In due course small crows were hatched. The crow couple

looked after their small ones with loving care. One day while they

were away in search of food, the serpent climbed the tree. He ate up

the young ones of the crows. When they came back to their nest they

found the nest empty. They were very sad. They asked other animals and

birds living there if they had seen their young ones. No one could

tell them anything. They were dejected for a long time. Finally when

they got over their sorrow, they decided that the next time they had

young ones they would not leave them alone.

Many months passed. The female crow laid eggs once more. Once again

they had young ones. This time the crow couple was very careful. They

always kept their eyes on the young ones. One of them always remained

with them. One day the female crow saw the big black serpent climbing

the tree towards her young ones. She crowed wildly for it to go away.

But the serpent paid no heed. He ate them up. The mother crow was

heart broken. She wept bitterly. All her relatives gathered round her.

They wanted to punish the serpent but by then he had vanished in to

his hole.

When the father crow returned in the evening, he heard the whole

story. His sorrow too knew no bounds. At last the mother crow said

that they would leave the tree and go away somewhere else. That way

the tragedy would not be repeated in future. But the father crow

reasoned with her. He said that they had been staying there for such a

long time. It was their house. If any one, then, it was the serpent

who had to go.

How could they punish the serpent? Then they remembered their friend,

the cunning old, fox who lived nearby. They would go and ask her to

help them. She was sure to have some clever way to punish the serpent.

So they went to the fox. They told her the whole story and then begged

her to help them. Otherwise they would have to leave their old banyan

tree and go somewhere else.

The fox thought for some time. Then she told them, " No, you do not

have to leave your old home. I will tell you how the serpent is to be

properly punished. " " Tomorrow morning the royal Princess will be going

to the river bank for a bath. Before entering the water she will take

off her ornaments and clothes and keep them beside the water. There

will be guards to look after them. " The fox continued, " You make it a

point to be hiding in a tree there. When nobody is looking, one of you

pick up the precious necklace of the princess and fly away. The other

one will follow making a lot of cawing sound. This would make the

guards and others see that you have taken away the necklace. They will

surely chase you. You carry the necklace to your tree and drop in on

to the hole of the serpent. Then watch the fun. "

The crows agreed to do as they were told. The next morning the crow

couple went on to the river- bank and hid themselves among the thick

branches of a tree growing near the bank. After some time the

Princess, followed by her friends, servants and guards also reached

there. The Princess and her friends took off their clothes and

ornaments and kept them at one place on the bank. Then they entered

the water and started frolicking among themselves. The crow-couple

were waiting for this opportunity. They had noticed a beautiful pearl

necklace among the ornaments of the Princess. The mother crow swooped

over it, picked it up and started flying away. The father crow

followed it, cawing loudly all the while. The servants and the guards

had seen the crow pick up the necklace. They all shouted loudly and

started chasing the crows.

The mother-crow came to the banyan-tree and dropped the necklace on

the hole of the serpent at the foot of the tree. Then she flew away.

The chasing servants had seen the necklace falling being dropped. They

reached the foot of the banyan tree. The necklace was half inside the

hole. So they tried to take it out with the help of sticks and spears.

The serpent did not like this disturbance. He got infuriated and came

out of the hole hissing menacingly. The attendants of the Princess

surrounded the serpent and beat it to death with their sticks and

weapons. They then picked up the necklace and went back. The crow

couple was watching the show from a safe distance. When they saw that

their old foe was safely dead, they both heaved a sigh of relief. Then

they lived happily ever after, increasing their family and always

grateful to their friend, the clever fox.

Learn from your parents the moral of the story - bye children meet you

in the next issue.
