I just think that it all comes down to what we do and how we keep our own minds, moment to moment. I can only speculate about any teacher's state; my own thoughts and actions in this moment seem like the real, alive thing. How does Ramana teach these: - Self is Happiness - Self is bliss ??? It is my experience and observation that if Ramana himself was very pathetic and miserable and he looked pathetic and miserable; very few people would be inspired to ask him about the " source of happiness " ! Looking miserable and pathetic himself, even If he did say about the 'secret of happiness'; not many would have believed him because, lacking happiness himself, his presence would have had no Power! On the contrary, if Ramana was indeed very peaceful, blissful, happy, people would be naturally inspired to learn from him even without Ramana having to utter a word. They would be attracted towards him and inspired to be like him by his Powerful Presence! On realizing his peaceful presence, visitors would be interested in asking him the secret of peace. He would inspire people just by his presence, just by his way of being and when he chose to speak; his words will be backed by the Power of His Presence. He will act like the Living Proof of the teaching! S>>If a teacher says something that I like or find interesting, then I'll try it out for myself, see if I can make it my own, watch what happens and let that be my teacher. Again, it is my experience and observation that people just don't do something, anything simply because somebody told them to. Only those who totally lack discretion might attempt to do such thing. In all other cases, people are inspired to try and experiment, somebody's words only if these words are backed by the power of his Being! When a Bill Gates talks about running a successful organization, a Warren Buffet talks about stock investing, a Robert Kiosaki talks about real estate investing, a Larry King talks about debate, a Gandhi talks about non violence - these words have great Power and they naturally inspire many people to try, experiment, learn, emulate. Even when these people don't speak, people try to learn from them by observing and studying their way of being, thinking, talking, working, investing, communicating. On the contrary, very few people are inspired to simply try and experiment anything that comes from a person who lack Power i.e. whose words are not backed by his Being! S >If I'm lost in the woods in the dark, and someone comes by with a flashlight, then I'll make use of that light, without worrying so much about the attainment of whoever is holding it. Because, you ALREADY know the power and use of a flashlight! Because, you ALREADY know that a flashlight can dispel darkness and you already know that it can help you find your way. Having known that before, you don't need anybody to teach you that again! >>So Ramana said to inquire " What am I? " and I tried that for myself, and was stunned by what happened. Sure, and, why were you compelled to try and experiment with what Ramana had said??? If you are like many normal people, you were inspired to believe, trust, try and experiment by what Ramana said because his words had Power! They had power of his reputation, reputation that was built because of the Presence, the way of being that he had! >>Whatever that dead Indian was or wasn't an example or embodiment of isn't the main thing for me. Or, it just might be. . . though, you may not think about it that much. >>Big big thanks for visiting my website and for posting your comments here! No problem, Stuart! You deserve it. Thanks for your response. Regards, Arvind Stuart http://home.comcast.net/~sresnick2/socalled.htm ----- PS: people like Wayne Liquorman have made terms dead 'Indians' quite popular for Ramana, Niz and now many use it somewhat unconsciously without paying any real attention to what kind of message it can potentially convey! To get the picture, imagine calling Einstein, a dead Jew or Martin Luther King, a dead black man! Would you like to do that? I think doing that will be unnecessary and stupid. To qualify Einstein with 'dead' and 'Jew' is unnecessary and it is 'insulting'!
