" Mystic Marvels to Entertain and Delight! " . I saw that sign on the midway of the State Fair and pestered my parents for it seemed hours, until they let me see that show. We were escorted in through a darkened maze of burlap drapes hanging from improvised wiring above, and that cascaded down unceremoniously to the sawdust floor. Upon arriving at the main room with folding chairs and a raised platform that served as a stage, we were somewhat overcome at first by the heavy and heady odor of incense emanating from unknown sources. commingled with the thick, warm, summer evening air and the closeness of the hoi polloi, it was a sweet and sweaty aroma hanging there in this holy and inviolable sanctuary. And, while awaiting the Great Svengali, we the spectators began to experience some very disagreeable and palpable misgivings about having decided to enter herein. We were anxious but also determined to see what the " Swami " (as advertised) would show or perform for us, the captive audience. I think there were only about 16-17 people in the room, which also to a young boy, was proof that only the selected Elect would be privileged with the knowledge and sight of " Miracles and Wonders " to be unfolded here this magical evening on the grounds of the State Fair, inside the Sacred Sanctum of the Mysterious. While there had been much talking among the patrons early on, when the time arrived and the incandescent light bulbs went dim, there was a Hush that enveloped the room with an almost foreboding sense of anticipation and awe. Then, under flood lighting, in a floating motion, came the Swami. Dressed in a flowing robe of a purplish hue, he also donned a whiter than white turban like affair that had a large green jewel centered on it. Adorning his bearded and mustachioed head, the swirled cloth added a touch of terror as he looked upon us as if looking into each and every one of us separately and alone. Attendants, arrayed in garments of such splendor as to shame Solomon, now also entered the room and began chanting a most haunting melody of strange affection. And now too, a misty fog began to drift in from the rear of our temple room. Up from the middle of a draped table on the platform stage now rose a ball of crystal that shone with the " Light of the Angels " that I had heard of in the Arabian Tales of Nights and Sights. The brilliance of that illuminating sphere did cast on the face of the now bent over Swami, a scary, yet somehow knowledge filled aura of Great Occult Powers. He was murmuring exotic sounds as the attendants, now humming low, made eerie and fantastical gestures with all and every limb they possessed. And we too became possessed of the Spirit of the Night and Mood of the Light. And then the 'Hindoo' of the 'Hoodoo' addressed the gathering of souls in attendance. " Beware the Aware! " , he said, in an accent that would please Bela Lugosi fans anywhere. And I was such a fan. And I was pleased. And I was also unimpressed with what followed. My parents had been right all along. They had told me it was all a sham and that I would leave disappointed after having seen the show. Damn them anyhow! They were ALWAYS right when it came to these things. But I always wondered too, how my folks(God Rest Their Souls), could take us kids EVERY Sunday, to see the same damn show every week at the church, and then tell us how Inspiring THAT was. No matter how often they told us that, every Sunday I left the house of God feeling the same sense of disappointment. But that's just me. And that's just life...... Like, have you ever been initiated into a 'secret' or 'fraternal' organization and than become disappointed in the 'SECRET " initiation rite? I mean why keep THAT silliness secret?? It's all about as mysterious and uncanny as " The Howdy Doody Show " . Methinks nowadays, so much farther down life's winding road, that the best bet for Awe and Wonder, is to take each day, and each night, and each other, as Holy and Unrepeatable and Majestic in the Ordinary Miracle of Life. ..bob who's bob? :-) ..b bobji baba
