I used to do a similar mediation some time back. I called it witnessing. I think Osho talked a lot about it and Tolle recommended it too. On some reflection and thinking. . . I found it conscious simulation of Sleep while staying Awake i.e. a 'trick' of putting the 'judging' mind to sleep while the body and 'witness mind' remains Alert and Awake. How do we fall asleep? We lie on bed and. . . and, our 'judging mind' gets turned off. We get dreams, just like involuntarily thoughts during day, difference is that the 'judging mind' is absent to make comments, label, accept or reject them. As a result dreams just happen, the witness knows it; but, there is no judging mind to make commentary on them or to make second layer stories around the dreams [thoughts] occurring. We get all kind of dreams [involuntary thoughts] during night and all kind of emotions; but, there is no judging mind to judge them, to make comments on them and as a result the dreams [involuntary thoughts] soon cease. . . the Witness Mind remains Alone. . . that is Deep Dreamless Sleep! Through witnessing, we attempt to replicate exactly same thing during the day. We cease to judge; we let what feelings, emotions, thoughts just happen without making any attempt to judge them or to make any comments on them. And, pretty soon, the same thing that happens during Every Night, happens in Day. . . that is, we enter Awake Deep Dreamless State. . . which is traditionally called Samadhi! Though, for some time now, I haven't done this mediation the same way, now. The difference is that the moment, I decide to watch - the mind just goes blank, void, empty of any content and remains that way as long as I remain the Alert Watcher. That is, it goes to the Awake Deep Dreamless Sleep without traveling through dreams [involuntary thinking]. I yet, am not sure, why and when this 'pattern' changed for me; but, my guess that it might have occurred because of few other meditations that I did. One is the One that I read Ramana recommend: - Abide as the Meditator... and, there is no need to meditate!
