Where do thoughts come from?

Thoughts just appear. They come out of

nothing and go back to nothing, like

clouds moving across the empty sky.

~ Byron katie

I read similar things in many

spiritual books and it appeared quite

fascinating. For some time, I thought

it was really true, but, on close

examination, I found that all my

thoughts in fact directly or indirectly

originate from me and my experiences.

I found that just as the rain falls

and it fills the ponds and then the

water in ponds evaporates under the sun

and it falls again as the rain, my

thoughts too 'circle' in the same way..

In the night I get dreams,

in day, I get thoughts. On first

glance, they might seem to be coming

from nowhere and for no reason. Yet, on

closer examination, I find it is only

the *thoughts, memories, experiences,

desires, aversions* that I had

accumulated before, is coming back in

somewhat random looking order.

I get thoughts related to my

experiences, desires, aversions and

memory only. Thoughts come out because

of my accumulated memories, experiences

and expectation and... not out of

'nothing'. And, because coming out of

" my " experience and memories, my

thoughts can be quite different than

that of a person with very different

background, prior knowledge and

experience.

I am very likely to get

thoughts which are different from what

I suspect Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking,

Tom Cruise or David Bekham get...

because, their life experiences,

memories and expectations are likely to

be quite different than mine.

---

* All of these together can be

called... Samskara.

I find this knowledge of my experiences

being a major source of my thoughts

very valuable because, it tells me that

my act of today has potential to create

my thoughts of tomorrow and thus, I can

work both on the SOURCE and after-

effect... and, not just on the after-

effect. Without this knowledge, I

might have to always deal with after-effect

only because I assume I can do nothing about

with their origination.

If I smoke cocaine or any

other drugs today... it might become a

source of some related thoughts in the

future. If I watch pornography now...

it might become a source of some

related thoughts in the future.

Understanding this link between what I

do and what thoughts I might get as

result can help me enable me in

choosing right action... which I can't

if I assume that I am always a helpless

'victim' of the thoughts and they

just happen to me out of nothing,

without me having done anything to

cause them in any way.

Sorry, Amigo, but they are coming out of nothing--just like Byron

says. What you call me and my wexperiences are just more thoughts. Do

thoughts come from thoughts?Fact is, they don't even come out of

nothing. They come out of we know not where. All this business of you

and your experiences--what are they right now? Memories. What are

memories?Thoughts. You, like everybody else, live in a fog of

memory.Your whole world--including George Bush and Mahatma Gandhi--are

pure figments. Z

Yes. I take aliveness to mean knowingness. The you is one of the thing-

events that somehow arise and get known.what is strange about the you

is that unlike other thing-events it has a quality of stickyness that

allows it to latch onto other thing-events or arise with them and seem

to be their knower--or ,as in the case of the body, seem to be the

latched-on-to thing-event itself. Z

No problem.

I will let you keep your beliefs,

I have no problem with them ;)

This is what I think:

I am 'guessing' and 'reasoning'

that people born in Palestine and people

born in Afghanistan and trained by Al Qaida

can get different thoughts than mine and

I might get thought about 'house mortgage'

which Bill Gates may not.

Further, I might get

different thoughts after watching a porno

versus attending an Adyashanti lecture.

IOW... I think I am just trying to state what might

seem quite obvious yet seems to be missing in

expressions like... 'thoughts come from nothing'.

I see that your 'beliefs' [thoughts] are different,

which is fine, maybe, you had different background,

expereinces or maybe... you read and believe in different

teachers :)

Bill gates wouldn't think this thought Both are just thoughts. The have

both appeared.Thoughts and the labels stuck on them saying from whence

they have come ARE ALL JUST MORE THOUGHTS.And thoughts happen. That is

all we know. Is this a belief or can it be verified by looking? Z

Sure. Watch pornography for 3 days

and see what kind of thoughts you get.

Then, fast for 3 days

and see what kind of thoughts you get.

Or, just read Tony parson, Ramesh, Wayne

or somebody else... and, just repeat what they say ;)

not even the 'you' who's been 'watching' (his???) thoughts...

for forty years or forty nanoseconds.

mysteriously nothing is lost.

it wasn't ever there.

Sure.

When you sit still...

you start getting STILL.

I can believe that.

That happens to me too.

I think you are

just as everybody including me, X, Y, Z and

Ramana and Niz are.

However, I prefer recomending only what

I have tried, tested and found true and

useful in my experience.

Do you think that's a good practice?

If you are going to recommend anything, that is the way to go about it.
