Guest guest
Been running into strange ideas about advaita lately from members of various lists - for fun, I'll post a few below. Quite honestly, these are very childish and show complete disregard for things like self-enquiry and actually examining " one's own predicament " - one does not get realized by sitting around reading out- of-context quotes handpicked for their " lovingness " and bitching at each other! (1) " Life is a dream " - someone actually suggested this is the whole teaching of Advaita. It was very hard not to call this person stupid, as it was a stupid thing to say. (2) " It's just nothing " - OK, go leap off a cliff. That's nihilism, not Nondualism. (3) " It's myself, I am the Universe " - that's solipsism, not nondualism. (4) " I have no free will, I'm not the doer, I'm just doing what happens " (or variations) - this is a truism, not truth. In other words, it's not a " justification " (or serial killers could use it in court, which would obviously be dumb). (5) (paraphrased) " It would be an onerous burden for this dream nondual person to hear that, because everything is already complete " - so if you heard it, things would no longer be complete? Is anyone paying attention? Does anybody even care about this stuff, or even bother to read anything but out-of-context quotes hand-picked for their " lovingness " and bicker/bitch at each other like a really bad episode of " One Life to Live? " I'm not complaining, but if you're even remotely interested in 'Realization' there are a few requirements - read N's " I Am That " : Sincerity, willingness to die for the truth are two big ones. Dispassion (almost absent on these lists), discrimination i.e. sorting the wheat from the chaff - this is called Viveka/Vairagya in Nisargadatta's tradition. Anyway, enjoy... if it's just about jacking around for you, great.

My friend, you have no clue 'your predicament'. It will dawn eventually - perhaps something like a diagnosis of terminal cancer, although I would not wish it on you. Peace...
