Self-Improvement is Only for Idiots

Hakim,

Thanks for the info on 'who' 'owns' the website, http://www.you-are-

that.com

I finally have a bit of time to sit down with a coffee and read some

of Jean-Pierre's stuff. I love the following words:

(Reminds me of U.G.) He writes,

" Self-improvement is only for idiots. There is nothing to improve.

Your body is a shit mill anyhow that has no future, take it for

granted. It is a dead body. It is doomed. Why Seek to improve the

impermanent? Isn't it foolish? "

And,

" What is born must die eventually and is impermanent in nature.

The transient is not worth spending any time on it or strive to

improve it, forget about the crappy body. "

LOL! Love that! But while it's true, does that mean I shouldn't be

careful about what I feed myself? You are what you eat, no? If I eat

McDonald's hamburgers every day, I'll start looking like one soon,

plus I'll probably die of a heart attack before I reach 40 years old.

And shouldn't I try to get some excercise? The older I get, the less

energy I have. I'm really starting to feel the aches and pains

already in my joints and muscles. And I'm only 38! I did Hatha Yoga

off and on for a few years and I never felt better. May I should get

back into it, eh?

I don't want to die young. I love life. I love working my full time

day j*o*b and building my part-time business and earning money. I

love the things money allows me to do. I want more of it. I love

the " rockstar " lifestyle and am striving to achieve it. I love my

family and spending time with them. It was my son's 10th birthday

yesterday. We had a blast together. Why would I want to give any of

that up?

Why wouldn't I want to try and improve myself as a father, husband,

business man and as a person? I've been studying Niz and Advaita

since about 2003 and I still feel I am so ignorant and so far away

from Self-Realization. I can understand Niz's teaching that, " It's

the Self-Realized Principle witnesses the manifest and I am That

which knows that I am " and such stuff. I 'get' it. But what's that

supposed to DO for me?

Maybe I'm just a very s-l-o-w learner or just very stubborn, too dumb

to understand what the heck it is I'm supposed to understand.

I understand there's nothing to understand. But I can't wrap my

little brain around that. And I 'get' that I'm not even supposed to

try wrapping my brain around ANY concepts at all. I realize I'm not

supposed to do anything, that there is no such thing as enlightenment

and all that crap. But I can't help but feel like I need to 'fix'

something 'inside' that's kind of 'broken.' And I do my best to treat

it all like a dream and not get emotionally involved in the 'show'

and all that, just treat it all like I would treat the passing

traffic passing by me on the street.

Grr. . . Know what I mean?

Hi Rob

The quotes from the website are along the lines of a lot of comments I've heard lately that seem to go to the opposite extreme in an attempt to remove the intense focus on the ego or the body or it's experiences. Comments along the lines of, 'the body is a shit pump, the ego doesn't exist, there are no experiences'. Nonduality often leads folks to such a perspective and it can be just as problematic as the other extreme, as you imply.

Self improvement is necessary as long as there's self judgment, and it's this focus on self acceptance that ultimately reveals that the improvement is never ending and is just a misidentification anyway. If someone with a strong negative ego hears that self improvement should be ignored, this is good news for that ego which can go on being as unconscious and ugly as it wants to with the blessing of the nondual community.

The fact that the body is impermanent shouldn't lead to the conclusion that it should be thrown in the trash and hauled out to the curb for the next pick up. The body is a sacred expression of what you truly are, and illusory or not, the quality of experience depends a great deal on how well it is honored.

A message that might take the 'middle path' might be that ego is a tool for spiritual evolution and so use it as such until it has served it's function. When there is no longer the need to improve it, the improvement will end. When there is no longer the need to reinforce it's structure, it will weaken from the lack of feeding.

As far as the body, follow your own wisdom as to how to care for it. For some this means proper diet and exercise, for others it may mean Yoga and meditation, for others it may focus on the body's energy system and ultimately it may be found that happiness is the universal cure for all physical ailments. All things are sacred because they are all what You are. Nothing can be excluded or dismissed.
