It poses the possibility that the failure of science to explain how the brain creates consciousness is due to looking for the wrong X such as a thing, phenomenon, or event separate and above the electrical impulses of sense data. What if consciousness is like wetness? Wetness is a property of liquids. It can not be separated from liquids. It doesn't independently exist, like light exist apart from the sun. So, maybe the best we can do is to say, consciousness is the way electrical nerve impulses feel to a brain. And that is that. The author also asks, What can we do when conscious that we can't do without being conscious? He concludes, nothing. He cannot see any contribution consciousness has made to evolution. I disagree. We can't learn without being conscious. Consciousness moved evolution from the slow random process of improving genes to the fast lane of improving memes. Think of ants. Their very sophisticated societies are carved in stone. Ours by comparison changes at an explosive rate. Right now, we are about to give evolution a quantum leap by tinkering with bioengineering. Without consciousness we couldn't have done that. Pete >
