It and its conceptual overlay are composed entirely of a vast storehouse of accumulated misinformation. The self is nothing other than a amalgam of the cultural-conceptual history that preceded it. The very idea of a separate self demands an explanation of its origin and invented gods emerge to terrify the fear based phenomenal-phantom. The self's ideas about its place in its own homocentric hierarchy place it low on the spiritual ladder.....on a relatively insignificant rung from which it surveys its imaginary kingdom. It is trapped not only in its own personal past but is constricted by a million years of accumulated conceptual-beliefs.....most of which evolved from its primitive ancestors. The misery that the spurious self experiences is a symptom and cannot be manipulated or alleviated from within. It functions very well and its raison d'etre is to be unhappy. The only hope is to see it for what it is.....and what it isn't. The rest will take care of itself.
