Guest guest
http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2008/11/23/7505086-sun.html Redheaded students in Toronto schools seem to have been spared from the Kick a Ginger Day-mania that swept across Canada. The day, unofficially held last Thursday in the midst of National Bullying Awareness Week, prompted a swarming of a red-headed student at a Calgary Catholic school, a hate crime investigation and more than a dozen suspensions. Similar attacks were reported in B.C. while Manitoba and Newfoundland schools were put on " heightened alert " even before the day began. But Toronto's public and Catholic boards told the Sun yesterday they had no reported incidents of the day dedicated to terrorizing carrot tops. " Principals were aware of the hype around the day and on alert as required, " Toronto Catholic board spokesman Mary Jo Deighan said. " This type of behaviour would not be tolerated in our schools. " There would be consequences for anyone exhibiting behaviours that are potentially hurtful to others. " Toronto District School Board chairman John Campbell said there were no assaults or occurrences against redheads in the public board either. " Kick a Ginger Day " was started by the popular animated TV show South Park. But the unusual prank targeting red-headed students gained momentum through Facebook. An online group called National Kick a Ginger Day had more than 5,000 members before it was taken down. On that group, a few individuals kept tallies of how many redheads they assaulted throughout the course of the day, while members in Alberta and Newfoundland reported police being called into schools and some kids being suspended or arrested. In an e-mail to group members, the group's creator Jaewon Kim apologized for the incident and vowed to disband the group. The hysteria might not be over yet. A new Facebook group, Kick a Non-Ginger Day, is calling for everyone but redheads to get kicked Dec. 5.
