FOUNDATION STONES FOR THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

31. At the end of the day, you should summarize

your activities and conduct self introspection whether you have behaved

like a human being. You should once for all decide not to repeat the bad ones.

32. As a human being, in your day to day activities

sometime or other, you are bound to get angered, but it should be like a fire

to a small piece of paper.

33. If you say that he is my man and the other one is

my opponent’s man that shows your mean mentality. Shun it.

34. When plants and animals are living in nature with

the quality of sacrifice, why not human beings?

35. You should be away from the persons who are

ungrateful in nature, the murderers of children and trouble creators in the

society.

36. You should not be contended with education,

penance and charities alone in society. You should feel contended with your

money, your homely food and spouse.

37. In the birth and death cycle, there is no

guarantee that you will take the birth as a human being again. To be born again

as a human being which alone will give a chance to realize God? Always chant

the name of God and tread the right path.

38. If you want to maintain a contended life –

you must develop an attitude to help others, use the wisdom in your work and do

not aspire for ambitions that are beyond reach.

39. Unless you avoid unnecessary disputes in the

society, aspiring other’s money and women, you can not travel in the spiritual

path.

40. If you maintain a tree called BAD qualities it will

give the fruits such as sorrow, unhappiness and disease. So try to maintain a

tree called GOOD qualities which you will give fruits such as pleasure,

happiness and good health.

3. SAI IN DREAMS:

http://www.ettitudemedia.com

These are the dream sequences and messages as received

by SaiBaNiSaji From our beloved GURU LORD SAINATH OF SHIRDI. In Anticipation

that this feature will help in one's spiritual growth are hereby compiled from

his personal Diary and presented to SAIBANDHUS.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY.

MAY -1996

16-05-1996- Thursday-08:00 Hrs.

With Yesterday’s Sai’s words that HE will catch the

thieves and assurance that everything will go well, I was mentally prepared for

the surgery. I was instructed by the Doctor on duty to get ready for the

operation scheduled to begin at 14:00 hrs. Today happens to be Thursday, the

most sought after by Sai devotees. I was hoping for the certain success and

waiting for the moment to arrive.

16-05-1996-Thursday- 21:00 Hrs

Even though, I was waiting ready from 13:00 Hrs, I was

not taken to the theatre up to 17:00 Hrs. On 14-05-1996, Baba advised to go for

surgery during daytime, but I was told that surgery will begin at 18:00 Hrs and

continue till midnight. I was little bit upset and worried on the latest

development. My wife, children and friends wished me for the best and sent me

into the operation theatre. I thought if there is truth Sai’s word, this

operation should be stalled for the night. I prayed Baba lying on the table.

Junior Doctors were preparing me for the operation. I was literally scared and

prayed Baba to see that operation does not take place today. It was 7:00 PM and

the telephone in the theatre gave a ring. The news was that leading surgeon Dr.

Prasada Rao is not in a position to attend the surgery and hence the operation

is postponed for the next day’s morning at 10:00 Hrs. The theatre nurse

informed me of the change. I believed that Sai heard my prayers and

re-scheduled the operation, establishing HIS presence and control. I have gone

through the few words I scribbled in my diary before entering the operation

theatre, which read like this-

“Today, I am going to fight a battle with death.

Shirdi Sai is by my side, if I come out with life, it is purely due to Sai’s

grace. I felt that Sai has saved me from most untoward by postponing the

surgery. I offered my prayers to HIM and waiting for the next day to dawn.

Sai’s words mean unfailing actions.

17-05-1996-Friday, 08:00 Hrs (Amavash- No Moon day)

My mother told me that it was Amavash. For any work to

begin, today is not auspicious, but still Sai advised me to get operated today

in the morning hours. I took it, as Sai wanted to remove darkness cast from my

life. Again Sai appeared in the form of a saint and said-

A new lease of life will come to you from now onwards.

Henceforth, do not accept money favours from anybody. Money is not the only

thing in life. Slowly develop habit to practice detachment. Travel in the path

shown by me.

I was getting ready to enter the operation theatre. I

took a vow that I shall again commence writing this diary if I am able to come

back after successful surgery and reunite with all my Sai bandhus. If it

happens the other way, in that case this will be my last page in the diary.

--Jai Sairam.

Every moment is auspicious to make a good beginning.

4. QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

"Shashi": shashi_31

32. Significance of Meditation

Preliminaries to Meditation

How to Practice Concentration on God Daily?

Due to worldly pleasures, you are unable to

control you mind and senses in meditation. When the mind is purified,

attachment of the mind for the perishable will go and your mind becomes pure.

Mind can be controlled by practice and dispassion. Out of these two, for

meditation, practice is more essential. When your aim is to realize God,

concentration of mind in the meditation is more essential. Then only you can go

into trance. In that state there is no affinity for objects, then you can

realize yourself and from there onwards there will be no deviation.

During meditation, if your body moves, your mind also

moves. When the mind is unsteady, your senses, breath and body get disturbed

and thereby you will not get concentration. If you meditate by keeping your

mind steady you will get concentration. If you merge all your parts of your

body in Atman, you will then get steadiness. Without doing any of these, you

are unnecessarily getting worried that you are not getting concentration in

meditation.

5. IN THE DAYS OF SHRI SHIRDI SAIBABA

SREERAMA-NAVAMI FESTIVAL from Sai

Satcharita-Chapter VI

This day was very dear and sacred to the devotees of

Sai Baba. Most of them turned out on the occasion, and took a leading part in

the management of the fair. Tatya Kote Patil looked to all outward affairs,

while the internal management was entirely left to one Radha Krishna Mai, a

female devotee of Baba. Her residence was full of guests on the occasion, and

she had to look to their needs, and also to arrange for all the paraphernalia

of the fair. Another work, which she willingly did, was to wash out and clean

and white-wash the entire Dwarakamai, its walls and floor, which were blackened

and were full of soot on account of the ever-burning Dhuni (sacred fire) of Sai

Baba. This work, she did during the night, when Sai Baba went to sleep every

alternate day in the Chavadi. She had to take out all the things, including

even the Dhuni, and after thorough cleaning and whitewashing replace them, as

they were before. Feeding the poor, which was so dear to Sai Baba, was also a

great item in this fair. For this purpose, cooking, on a grand scale and

preparing various sweet dishes, was done in Radha-Krishna Mai’s lodging, and,

various rich and wealthy devotees took a leading part in this affair.

Sree Ram Navami 04-04-2009

The birthday of Rama Chandra is observed on the 9th of

the light half of the month Chaitra (March-April) and is kept by some as a

strict fast. It was on this day that Vishnu incarnated as Rama through King

Dasharadh's wife Kaushalya. This day is also important because the celebrated

Sanskrit poet Tulsi Das started composing his classic Ram Charit Manas. The

devotees take a bath in Saryu River on this day. The fast on this day reminds

us about the righteousness of Rama, his devotion to his teacher, removal of

casteism, shelter to the refugee, brotherhood, devotion to parents, monogamy,

devotion to the master by Hanuman and Angadh, dutiful devotion of huge bird

Garuda. The temples of Rama are illuminated and his image adorned with costly

ornaments. The Ramayana is read in the temples and Naches (nautches) are kept

up during the night of the 9th day. The celebration concludes on the

10th day.

6. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

Baba appeared to a non-devotee

Peace be with you all.

I would like to share this experience with all Sai

Devotees. I am a devotee of Sai Baba since child hood. I often conduct prayer

meetings at my home. One of the attendees, a woman asked me who that Baba with

a crown is. I have Sai's picture with the saffron cloth, tied to his head so I

could not understand at that time what she was talking about.

After two weeks, I received a picture of Baba with a

crown (from Shirdi). I left it on my altar. That same woman came visiting me

again, saw the picture of Baba and said "This is the same crown I saw in

my vision" I knew for a fact that Baba had visited her, here in Kuwait.

Amazing isn't it.

7. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar,

Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you

know Baba use to play with children and used to tell stories to them? I felt

children visiting Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Now I want

to tell the stories what heard in my child hood.

The Peacock and the Tortoise

Once upon a time a peacock and a tortoise became great

friends. The peacock lived on a tree on the banks of the stream in which the

tortoise had his home; and daily the peacock after he had a drink of water

danced near the stream and displayed his gay plumage for the amusement of his

friend.

One unfortunate day, a bird-catcher who was on the

prowl caught the peacock and was about taking him away to the market. The

unhappy bird begged of his captor to allow him to bid his friend the tortoise

good-bye, as it would be the last time he would see him.

The bird-catcher allowed him his prayer and took him

to the tortoise, who was greatly moved to see his friend a captive. The tortoise

asked the bird-catcher to let the peacock go; but he laughed at the request,

saying that was his means of livelihood.

The tortoise then said, "If I make you a handsome

present, will you let my friend go?Certainly," answered the

bird-catcher that is all I want." Whereupon the tortoise dived into the

water and in a few seconds came up with a handsome pearl, which, to the great

astonishment of the bird-catcher, he handed to him. This was beyond his

expectations, and he let the peacock go immediately.

A short time after, the avaricious man came back and

told the tortoise that he thought he had not paid enough for the release of his

friend, and threatened that, unless a match to that pearl was obtained for him,

he would again catch the peacock. The tortoise, who had already advised his

friend to betake himself to a distant jungle on being set free, was greatly

enraged at the greed of this man.

"Well," said the tortoise, "if you

insist on having another pearl like it, give it to me and I will fish you out

an exact match for it." The stupidity of the bird-catcher prevented his

reasoning that "one in the hand was equal to two in the bed of the

stream," and he speedily gave the pearl to the wily tortoise, who swam out

with it saying, "I am no fool to take one and give two!" and

forthwith disappeared, leaving the bird-catcher to be sorry ever after for his

covetousness.

8. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA

swamymain

Shri Sai Satcharitra

Chapter XXXII

In Quest of Guru and God - Fasting Disapproved.

In

this Chapter Hemadpant describes two things: - (1) How Baba met His Guru in the

woods, and through him God; and (2) How Baba made one Mrs. Ghokhale, who had

made up her mind to fast for three days, eat Puran-Polis.

There

are other schools where you see an altogether different spectacle. The

disciples go there to seek knowledge and spend their money, time and labour;

but ultimately they have to repent. The Guru there boasts of his secret

knowledge and his straight-forwardness. He makes a show of his sacredness and

holiness, but he is not tender at heart. He speaks a lot and sings his own

glory; but his own words do not touch the disciples' hearts and they are not

convinced. So far as Self-realization is concerned, he has none. How can such

schools be of any use to the disciples and how can they be benefited? The

master (Guru) mentioned above was of different type. By his grace, realization

flashed upon me of itself, without effort or study. I had not to seek anything,

but everything became clear to me as broad day light. The Guru alone knows how

the topsy-turvy Suspension, 'with head down and feet up' can give happiness!

Sai

Ram. True to some extent but if destiny wills it, the real Guru goes to such a

false Guru as a disciple and transforms the false into true, as was done by Sri

Sai when He accepted the pseudo Guru Jawahar Ali and transformed him by His

selfless and loving service. True love is the philosopher’s stone, and converts

base metals into pure gold. Also, if the disciple gives up the ego totally, the

real Guru helps as is shown in Sri Guru Charitra. Thus there is no false guru.

The false guru also is a facet of the real Guru and helps the disciple by

removing some karmic debts (Kanchanam Karma Vimochanam). Sai Ram.

Among

the four, one was a Karmatha (Ritualistic) who only knew how to observe, and

abstain from, certain rites; the second was a Jnani, who was puffed up with

pride of knowledge and the third was a Bhakta who surrendered himself

completely to God, believing that he was the sole doer. When they were

discussing and arguing, the question of God turned up, and they, depending on

their unaided knowledge, went in search of Him.

Sai

Ram. All are different facets of the same self. Sai was the ripe fruit or

vegetable, as mentioned in the Maha Mantra (Tryambakam Yaja mahe, sugandhim

pushtivardhanam, urvaruka miva bandhanat mrutyor muksheeya mamrutat). The

Jnani’s jnana was contaminated with pride. The bhakta who surrendered himself

to God was unable to see God in the fellow human being. Thus each of them were

suffering from the egoistic perceptions like the blind men and the elephant.

Sai was ready to break through the wall that kept him from the whole. Sai Ram

9. ARTICLES FROM SAI DEVOTEES:

UGADI – GUDI PADWA (27-03-2009)

Ugadhi (literally - the start of an era) is the New

Year’s Day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Ugadhi for this festival, the people

of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa.

The festival marks the New Year day for people who

follow the southern Indian lunar calendar, pervasively adhered to in the states

of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. This calendar reckons dates based

on the Salivahana era (Salivahana Saka), which begins its count from the

supposed date of the founding of the Empire by the legendary hero Salivahana.

This Empire is generally accepted as being that of the "Andhra

Dynasty". The Salivahana era begins its count of years from the year

corresponding to 78 AD of the Gregorian calendar. Thus, the year 2000 AD

corresponds to the year 1922 of the Salivahana Era.

In the terminology used by this lunar calendar, Ugadhi

falls on Chaitra Sudhdha Paadyami or the first day of the bright half of the

Hindu month of Chaitra. This generally falls in the months of March or April of

the Gregorian calendar.

Observance in Andhra and Karnataka

The Telugu and Kannada people celebrate the festival

with great fanfare; gatherings of the extended family and a sumptuous feast are

de rigueur. The day, however, begins with ritual showers followed by prayers,

and then the eating of a specific mixture called "Ugadhi Pachhadi" in

Telugu and "Bevu-Bella" in Kannada, symbolizes the fact that life is

a mixture of pleasure and pain, which should be accepted together and with

equanimity.

Later, people traditionally gather to listen to the

recitation of the religious almanac (Panchangam) of the coming year, and to the

general forecast of the year to come.

Observance in Maharashtra

The festival is called "Gudi Padwa" in

Maharashtra; it heralds the advent of New Year and is one of the most

auspicious days for Maharashtrians.

It is customary to erect ‘Gudis’ on the first day

(Padwa) of the Marathi New Year. 'Gudi' is a bamboo staff with a coloured silk

cloth and a garlanded goblet atop it, which symbolizes victory or achievement.

Hence, this day is known as “Gudipadwa†in Maharashtra. The New Year is ushered

in with the worship of the "Gudi" and the distribution of a specific

"Prasadam" comprising tender Neem leaves, gram-pulse and jaggery.

SAI’S PHILOSOPHY:

Sairam

At the outset, I request you to accept my humble

pranams. To talk of Shiridi Sai’s philosophy is like attempting to measure

energy contained in the five basic elements of the universe i.e. Air, water,

fire, earth and sky. Making attempt to measure their energy content is like

experiencing both present and future at the same time. In chapter-3 of Sri Sai

Satcharita, Baba said -“I reside in the hearts of everyone. My presence is spread

all over the living force. I am the driving force behind all that is happening

everywhere. I am all-pervasive, I am the cause for creation and I am the

universal motherâ€.

Sadhgurus are like lamps in society helping us to

remove the darkness into which we are embedded. It

would be foolish to probe into the raw materials with which the lamps are made.

Sai lighted the lamps with water in Dwarakamayi that gave light to the

surroundings and removed the darkness called ignorance. We should give importance

to the light received rather than how and from what source the light is

emitted. It will be appropriate to say that I would be much happier to go by

the path of light as shown by Lord Sainath.

Whenever I hold Satcharita in my hands for parayana, I

always felt in my mind as if Sai wanted to convey that – “My children are

like flying kites in the sky. Twine attached to the kite for flying is their

life. Baba said-“I am like the bobbin to ensure that the twine never gets

entangledâ€. This is in line with one of the eleven assurances of Sai

wherein He said that- “I shall always protect my devotees whenever called for,

from my Samadhiâ€.

I was feeling sad that I could not undertake any

pilgrimage. Sai consoled me saying-“You need not go to Haridwar for having

darshan of the Lord Hari. Close your eyes and open the gates of your mind and

you can find Hari thereâ€. This tatva, we can find in chapter-15 of

Sri Sai Satcharita, as told by Baba himself- “I reside in everybody’s hearts.

Pray on me and I shall always be Eveready to protect youâ€.

The breeze flowing from Sai sagar will be the same

either inside the towering buildings built by wealthy people or in small huts

constructed by the poor ones by their sideâ€. This is

rightly demonstrated by the same amount of love and affection Baba showered on

all. Baba loved equally all the three devotees- Gopal mukund booti

– a well to do rich man, Shyama- a poor teacher and Bhagoji shinde-a

person suffering from Leprosy- all belonging to different sections in society.

“Taking bath after performing the last rites of an

unclaimed body is as good as bathing thousand times in the holy Ganges.â€

Baba stood as an example for this act by performing the last rites of his

ardent devotee ‘Megha’.

“Do not hate a rich person and do not humiliate a poor

manâ€. Let us refer to chapter-12 of Sri Sai Satcharita,

Baba sent millionaire, Gopala mukund buti to a poor Brahmin Mule Sastri for

collecting the Dakshina from him and thereby fostered friendship between the

rich and poor

“Sexual relationship with one’s own wife is like

sugar. Extra marital affairs are like inviting more sugar into the body than

what is neededâ€. We come across this tatva in chapter-49 of Sri Sai

Satcharita. A well to do man came from Bijapur along with his family for having

darshan of Baba. The woman lifted her veil. Nana sahib chandorkar, seated by

the side of Baba was stunned by her extra ordinary beauty and was eager to

watch the woman’s face again and again. Baba cautioned and controlled Nana in

time and thereby corrected him.

How long can you keep running away from the death that

is following every moment like a shadow? Therefore do not be scared of deathâ€.

We come across this tatva in the chapter-33 of Sri Sai Satcharita .Baba used to

distribute ‘udhi’ to His devotees to constantly remind that the physical

body would one day turn into ashes after going through all phases in

one’s life cycle.

“There is no point in going on thinking how one’s

last rites would be performed. They would certainly happen as per the karmic

deeds. In line with this tatva, Baba supervised the last rites of

Megha, His ardent devotee. However when Radhakrishanmai died under mysterious

circumstances, Kopergaon police performed her last rites.

“Never travel with others while travelling on the

spiritual path. You should do it all alone under the guidance of Sadhguruâ€.

We come across this aspect of tatva in chapter-26 of Sri Sai Satcharita. Bhakta

Panth came for having Baba’s darshan and fell unconscious. Baba sprinkled water

on his forehead. On Panth coming back to senses, Baba said- “Come what may; do

not loosen your grip. Always stay firm and keep faith in your Guruâ€. In this

way Baba wanted everybody to move forward in a path shown by their Guru.
