We could call this ego, but it's not problematic and does not result in suffering. Self awareness, in a biological context, is what makes it possible to contemplate one's fate and project the self image into the future and past. This allows for the potential of suffering and this is what we're addressing when we talk about ego. We found the real 'Hotel California' and the 'Seinfeld' diner. What will you find? I like using the example that I could program a computer to respond to a name in less than a half hour, displaying a head turning in response to the words " hey, george " spoken into a mic. That doesn't indicate the computer having an ego.
