" Continuity " of self is an illusion. We are only 'there' when a thought arises about us. So, how is the illusion perpetrated and perpetuated, then? Simple -- by ensuring that we 'think of ourselves' as often as possible, so as to maintain a sense of imaginary security about our continuity. And... the easiest way to do this... is to imagine a number of 'personal problems' or 'issues' that we have -- So, that we may 'think of ourselves' and 'our problems' as often as possible -- So, that we may imaginarily exist, unceasingly, as thought. But: It is the mechanism of separation which is causing the illusion of me and not the thinking about me. Only when there is a separation between the thinker and the thought then the illusion of me thinking about me can arise. Separation results from 'will' together with attention directed to the body. Just look at some object in your room and you will realize a separation between the 'looker' which is the body and that object which gets looked at.
