Guest guest
The problem: Understanding one's personal reality while at the same time being it: We interpret evidence in light of our acquired presuppositions and we form our presuppositions in light of the evidence. It only through the comparisons of our presuppositions with the evidence that we gain both presuppositions and our private interpretation of the evidence. Any evidence is colored by our presuppositions and our presuppositions are colored by the evidence. The process is circular and unending. These ideas all being read and evaluated by an amalgam of presuppositions. They will be accepted or not depending on how well they coincide with the accumulated world view that makes up your personal totality. You will see them or not based solely on what filters are in place. But if you see it............RUN! Something hungry is watching you. :-0 toombaru

There is a big emotional component to the circularity. Even the aspect you discuss, which involves confirmation of presuppositions, involves a desire for security and predictability. And that indicates that insecurity and managing unpredictability is involved. The self process doesn't just attempt to confirm expectations, it reacts against and toward projections. Thus it uses its own angst (desire/fear) as fuel, largely by denying how contradictory it is, and projecting it " out there " to deal with it. Then the angst can react against its projections and use the reactivity to motivate further projecting. Even the car slamming on your finger, even the pain of the finger is projection. Without the projection, there only is an indescribable immediacy, with no person, world, self, or other constructed. No one " out there " taught you how to project or " made " you start projecting. No self " in here " ever learned to project, nor is doing the projecting. The " in here " and " out there " are the " how " of the projection process, are the circularity of it, are the attempted reinforcement of it. It goes on and on, and recedes back and back, and involves a physical world and a situation in that world, society, culture, history, and the individual in pursuit of happiness (and avoiding various terrors). Presupposition (by an assumed self in here) is an aspect of it. - Dan -
