On the Guru/Disciple, Student/Teacher relationship, and Advaita in general

Omkaradatta: The 'goal' is to go beyond the help of all outside agency

altogether. One is totally on one's own. As far as I know (and fwiw), Jed

Mckenna is very emphatic about this point. " Outward? " Inward.

As long as " I need you " for something (emotional needs in particular), I am

there. My need, desire, hope, fear... is my existence, as a being separate from

you.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the teacher/student thing -- only,

it's limited. A teacher can suggest, hint, guide, instruct, etc. Unfortunately,

" advaita " isn't a math class, it's about the end of the self/other separation,

and teacher/student is a (supposed :-p) self/other relationship.

So, see the limitations, that's all.

Because *you are* the whole of life itself, and (in theory at least) not aware

of it.

If you encounter things/beings that seem to be other than you, and also

encounter yourself (which requires an encounterer and encounteree), the split is

there.

Relationship within " Oneness " isn't possible. It's an illusion. Relationship

requires two or more. Not that human beings can't interact, but there is no

relationship involved.

Unbeknownst to us, we are actually " in relationship " with two aspects of

ourselves.

Sure, that can happen (at least in theory) although lovers get very close over

many years, all the time, and don't 'wake up' from it'.

Good luck finding an actually-awake teacher to get close enough to for that to

happen (I mean the well wishes sincerely).

Life is, perhaps, the only teacher.

And who ever said disillusionment can't be a good teacher?

It's just not a pleasant one :-p.

Remember, we aren't actually in relationship ;-). I am what you take me to be,

and vice-versa, eh?

People see others as *they* are, not as the other actually is. I can only

testify to it, can't prove it or anything.

But I can say that all one has of the other are the words, interpreted and

" translated " by one's own psyche.

Anyhoo... I'm off to bed, nice chatting with ya :-).
