Functional magnetic resonance imaging scans (fMRI scans) of Tibetan monks and Hindu yogis have shown that during deep meditation the parts of the brain that gives us a sense of location in time and space are less active. If you slow down the thought process, and at the same time reduce the brain's sense of location, consciousness loses both its content and its boundaries. You feel infinite, timeless, and empty. Physical and Mental? > > > > > http://home.att.net/~meditation/brain.html .... The brain is essential to human life, and when the brain dies, the entire physical body dies with it. Even in deep sleep the brain is active and aware, and able to direct functions as and when necessary. For example, the brain may create a fearful dream to wake you up if your body is threatened by danger, such as a lack of oxygen due to a difficulty in breathing. The central function of the human brain is awareness. Awareness is required to know things like boundaries, size, limits, identifications, and the sense of self and the sense of the other. Awareness itself has no intrinsic size, boundary limits, or any other attributes of its own. Awareness is required to know all attributes, but awareness itself can be nothing but just plain awareness. That is the pure awareness of meditation. The sense of time, the beginning and the end, the birth and the death, requires memory. Awareness always precedes memory. Awareness serves as the background and base for memory, but memory cannot have any trace of the beginning or end of awareness. This makes awareness feel eternal no matter what the reality. We experience everything in our brain: sound, vision, smell, taste, touch, temperature, pleasure, pain, reason, emotion. Everything we feel and see are signals presented inside the brain, from neuron to neuron, in a web of billions of brain cells. When you look at images of distant stars and galaxies, those pictures are formed inside us, not outside of us. When you realign your focus on the background of consciousness during meditation, you clearly see that all outside images are really inside images. The sensation *I am body* is itself an effort of the brain. Brain is our intimate personal reality, not the body. The brain is able to conjure up the idea of the body by repeated practice and focus. The brain can easily convince itself of being anything it wants. After all, there is no one else inside you to question it. The brain is the one that says " I am this!, " as well as being the final arbitrator of its own validity. Some may focus on a flower and convince themselves that they have experienced " flower consciousness. " Others go further and convince themselves that they are a great savior, saint, or a heroic world leader. Given enough focus and practice, the brain can convince itself of anything, because the brain is the final judge and jury of our perception of reality. Thus, we all live in different brain worlds of our own creation. When those brain worlds collide, conflict and wars arise. The feeling of solidity of the body is generated by the brain constantly sending and receiving signals to and from different organs. The more frequent and stronger the signals, the more solid the body feels. Mediation is a way to relax the brain and quiet down its constant communication with the body and reduce the frequency of thoughts. As the brain relaxes and creates less activity and noise, the feeling *I am the body* starts to dissolve. Scientists now understand through functional magnetic resonance imaging scans (fMRI scans) that the part of the brain which gives us a sense of location in time and space is less active during intense meditation. With no sense of location, consciousness loses its boundaries and subjectively feels infinite and timeless. The body may seem to completely disappear, leaving only pure consciousness in its place. That is death of the 'I.' During deep dreamless sleep, the same dissolution of the 'I' happens, but there is no consciousness to experience it. .... The more orgasms you have, the more Oxytosin you make, its that simple! For those of you without sex partners, treat yourself to some one sided love making sessions. A very wise and caring female physical therapist I know once gently led an older woman fibromyalgia patient to the office bathroom, whispered in her ear and handed her a vibrator! Oxytosin release was the objective; a happier and less painful patient was the result. There is enough erotica out there, written, audio and visual to stimulate the solo practitioner. There are enough techniques and toys available for masturbation that the Oxytosin release results can be fruitful and fulfilling.

Sex stimulates the production of hormones that give pleasure (dopamine) and lighten your mood (serotonin). An act of love also produces endorphins - so called hormones of happiness – that bring a human being into a state of euphoria during orgasm. Because of these psychotropic substances sex is considered to be the best antidepressant and tranquilizer....

Since in everyone the highest love is alone felt for oneself, and since happiness alone is the cause of love, in order to attain that happiness, which is one's real nature and which is experienced daily in the mindless state of deep sleep, it is necessary to know oneself. To achieve that, enquiry in the form `Who am I?' is the foremost means....`Who am I?' The physical body, composed of the seven dhatus, is not `I'. The five sense organs and the five types of perception known through the senses are not `I'. The five parts of the body which act and their functions are not `I'. The five vital airs such asprana, which perform the five vital functions such as respiration, are not `I'. Even the mind that thinks is not `I'. In the state of deep sleep vishaya vasanas remain. Devoid of sensory knowledge and activity, even this [state] is not `I'. After negating all of the above as `not I, not I', the knowledge that alone remains is itself `I'. The nature of knowledge is sat-chit-ananda[being-consciousness-bliss]....If one goes on examining the nature of the mind, it will finally be discovered that [what was taken to be] the mind is really only one's self. That which is called one's self is really Atman, one's real nature. The mind always depends for its existence on something tangible. It cannot subsist by itself. It is the mind that is called sukshma sarira [the subtle body] or jiva [the soul].
