The breathing rhythm change because of them, with the change in the breathing rhythm the heart rate and blood flow (oxygen flow and consumption) changes. In a dream, we see a snake, a vampire or an enemy. Seeing that image cause fear. That fear causes fear hormone. That hormone causes pain and discomfort. Various practices of spirituality suggest us how can we " wake up " out of this 'self produced' 'fearful illusion' and see that in reality, there are no enemies and thus, alleviate fear from its (thought) root. - Advaita can alleviate fear by inquiry into reality. When you discover our thought produced fearful images to be false much of the fear disappears on its own. When we see into the " mechanics " of how these fearful images are produced... the " fear producing HABIT " itself disappears. When we discover (our) reality to be formless, birth-less, death-less, untouched, 'can not be touched', 'not a thing'... the source and cause behind much of the fear falls away. - Byron Katie asks to investigate the present thought and examine if that is true. If the thought is found to be not true, it falls and the fear produced by it too falls. - Observation simply asks us to observe the thoughts thus, bringing a distance, impartiality, a third party sanity (required to be an observer). This lessens our investment and participation in the the fear producing thoughts. This also enables us to see it in its entirety. Once the thought is truly understood this way, it stops being fearful. - Yoga and pranayam asks us to directly work on the body and breathing. Once the body relaxes and breathing becomes regular.... the heart-rate changes, the blood-flow changes, the body state changes and... the hormones too changes. Once the grip of the fear is gone and the sanity returns in the body and mind... the thought can then be investigated, if so desired. - The bhakti, the devotion simply replaces the fear of a thing with the love for another... a God, a deity, a guru, a concept. With this change in attention... fear loses its food and supply and starts losing strength. With love and devotion, the love hormone starts flowing, the body state starts changing. And, with the grip of fear gone, the thought can be investigated... if needed. > > > - Advaita asks to investigate.
