By imagining that you are born as so-and-so, you become a slave to the so-and-so. The essence of slavery is to imagine yourself to be a process, to have past and future, to have history. In fact, we have no history, we are not a process, we do not develop, nor decay; also see all as a dream and stay out of it. " > > -- From " I Am That " Hi Tim - Thanks for posting this statement from Nis. Yes - this moment has no history. It doesn't matter if a memory arises. The memory arising in the moment, can't touch the *is-ness* of the moment. The identity formed through history (although important for a credit-check from a bank) is fragmentation, is not actual. (Don't tell your loan officer this, though.) The moment in all its diversity of texture, is not divisible. Refers to nothing else. Since all the comments ever offered about this, including Nisargadatta's, are interpreted by " mind " (i.e., thought and memory, which your banker relies on), there can be a mistaken impression - as if his words give us something to think about, to ponder, to form an opinion about - they don't. (Yes, that's my opinion and I'm not sticking to it.) And, while one can go to a bank and apply for a loan, knowing how to offer the proper i.d. - one is not that history-formed identity. One takes care of business, and rests (the Sabbath). One renders unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God, what is God's. One knows this only as present, as such. (Solomon in all his glory was not decked out like one of these flowers of the moment.) Peace, love, out ... -- Dan --
