Guest guest
Dear Advaitins, Nowdays, our members are becoming different - After reading the different e-mails floating betrween few members, I personally feel, our members are becoming more and more bothered about ego and such related things. Also, they don't bother about Sankara and Ramana. Even more, some even don't believe in rituals. How could one expect some of our members to remember about Sankara's birth day? The type of discussions has made even learned and respected Dayanandasaraswatji to say that he is going to keep mum and the reply for him was so crude from the other member. " Also, I think, the group " Advaitin " is not a place to discuss about the birth day's of any one. It is a group, only for discussing and sharing the scholaliness of some members on " Advaita " . They are not the torch bearers of Adi Sankara or for that matter, any one else. !!!!!!!! " At times I feel like resigning from this group. Forgive me, if if there is any thing wrong in my statement. Guest guest
On this day of Adi Shankara BHagvadapada's birth anniversary, join me in saluting the greatest exponent of Advaita philosophy , jagadguru Shankaracharya i beoke my self imposed mauna just to sing Adi Shankara's praises and pay tribute to his great teachings . Totakacharya , a disciple of ADI SHANKARACHARYA says in the very first verse of Toatakashtakam ( a hymn he composed in honor of his guru) VIDITAKILA SASTRA SUDHA JALATHE MAHITOPA NISATKATHI TARTHANIDHE HRDAYEKALAYE VIMALAM SARANAM BHAVA SANKARA DESIKA ME SARANAM ||1|| O THOU, THE KNOWER OF ALL THE MILK-OCEAN OF SCRIPTURES! THE EXPOUNDER OF THE TOPICS OF GREAT UPANISADIC TREASURE-TROVE! ON THY FAULTLESS FEET I MEDITATE IN MY HEART. BE THOU MY REFUGE O MASTER, SANKARA i reproduce here an excerpt from Kanchi Mahaperiyavaals writings ''' Who is Sri Sankara? He is lokasankarah; he makes for the welfare of the whole world. He is Siva Himself. Sivam means auspiciousness or what is propitious. What does `Sam'' mean in the name 'Sankara'? It means sukham, bliss or aananda. The Brihadaaranyakopanishad speaks of it as 'Priyam', that which is dear. Ordinarily, the people of the world do not know where that sam, priyam or aanandam can be found. Hence they are afflicted with worldly sorrows. Sri Bhagavatpada was filled with compassion at the sight of world thus afflicted. He desired that men should enjoy the unlimited bliss of self-realisation What is that bliss by realising which Sri Sankara Himself left misery far behind? Sri Sankara says: " One's own self is Sukam or bliss. One's own self is all. One's own self is Brahman. Brahman alone is all that we perceive. Everything is the effect of Brahman. The cause itself is the effect. The effect is non-different from the cause. Everything is Sam or bliss. Let this Sam or bliss be enjoyed, in all our experiences. Let it be enjoyed as one's own inner self or Atman. " In the world Everything external to the self is dear for the reason that it is related to the self. The self alone is ultimately dear to everyone. Realisation of the self as non-different from Brahman is Supreme Bliss. Sri Sankara taught that Paramaatman is one, tat everything is Brahaman and that all is one. What the veda taught is also what Sri Sankara taught. Sri Sankara said that as all is Brahman there is nothing apart from Brahman materialists hold that the world alone is real and the Brahaman does not exist. The Nyaaya logicians and other dualists said that the world and Brahman are both real. The Buddhists denied both the world and no reality in its own right apart from Brahman is the teaching of Sri Sankara. Even in Buddhistic days, the systems anterior to it did not cease to exist. Chaarvaaka philosophy could not displace the systems of thought before its time. But on the emergence of Sri Sankara's philosophy, all earlier systems lost their appeal like stars losing their light on the rising of the Sun. Need it be said the partial light becomes dimmed before the Supreme and limitless effulgence of Universal Light? The methods of Bhakti, Upaasana and ethical virtues, and the conflicting paths of Tantra, Aachaara, Yoga and Samadhi, all these get absorbed in the indivisible Bliss of the non-dual Atman just as river flowing east, south, west and north get merged in one ocean. That Supreme Bliss is the goal of all these paths. " In the Chandogya Upanishad itself it is declared that only by the grace of the Guru true knowledge is possible. It says " aacaaryavaan purusho veda " (only one who has a Preceptor, gains true knowledge). Join me saluting the Greatest exponent of Advaita , the one and only Acharya , Shankara Bhagvadapada! Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara ps - Thanks dear Anandaji for restoring the true perspective on what constitutes real Bliss !

Guest guest
i endorse what dr.harikrishna has written.we are all reflected self and at its highest level still a reflection.when does the image and reflectio become one? when ther is no distance between them.at that time there is neither image nor the reflection.there are as many ways as you can think of reaching the summit of ananda the brahman and not one of them inferior to others.we should discuss what we have really understood and realised of vedanta, our success and failures in doing so. may lord krishna enlighten us all in our quest for this knowledge that is freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Guest guest
Thank You - Dr.Shyamji for that lovely link Swami Dayananda is at his best while singing the praises of the greatest Avharya of all times , sri sri Adi Shankara Bhagvadapada! " The eye of wisdom beholds everywhere the Self that is Consciousness and Being; the eye of unwisdom may not behold it, as the blind see not the shining sun. " If we close our eyes to the Truth , we can only see darkness ! whose fault is it ? Kabir dasji says the musk is in the navel of the deer but the deer roams in the forest looking for the musk. The fragrance of upanishads and vedas are all found in the brahmasutras, bhasyas etc of shankara bhagvadaspada but we are like the deer looking for the fragrance outside of our time honred scriptures! Guest guest
Dear Advaitins, I started the above message on the eve of a Great Legend on whose name the Advaitin group was started I take it. Is it wrong to wish a very happy Sri Adi Sankaraia Jayanti? If the moderators feel this group should not talk about Sri Adi Sankara's Birth, I think it is better to specify so that the members of Advaita may not raise this topic in the future. There were certain things said about this topic like " How could one expect some of our members to remember about Adi Sankara's birthday? " That is the very reason I raised this topic just on the day of Sri Adi Sankara's birthday. " Advaita is not a place to discuss about the birthday of any one " How the masjority of our members fee about this? The group formed on the basis of the Legend and his philosophy I understand. How dare anybody say that Advaita is not a place to discuss about Sri Adi Sankara's birthday. Does it make any sense? " At times I feel like resigning from the group " I am sure all the members are in this group with their free will and on the approval of the moderators. Nobody asks to join or resign except the individual. There are some facts about Sri Adi Sankara's birth date recently and it was agreed by several groups including all the four Mathas of Sri Sankara, yet nobody talks about it. WHY?? Why people are afraid to talk about facts which were agreed? I hope our moderators will understand my feelings. I would appreciate some comments about Sri Adi Sankara's Birth day to resolve this problem once for all. Guest guest
Namaste Sri Pakira: First, let me thank you for remembering Adi Sankara's birthday and for your very first post on 21st of April. Your statement within the quote contained in your post is not factual: " If the moderators feel this group should not talk about Sri Adi Sankara's Birth, I think it is better to specify so that the members of Advaita may not raise this topic in the future. " I want to assure you that the moderators encourage you and every member is to pay their tribute to the ParamaGuru by posting his works with appropriate commentary. As one of the moderators of this list, may I request you to read and study one of the works of Adi Sankara and share your thoughts with the rest of the members. This is the best way for all of us to remember Sri Adi Sankara and all our Guru Parampara. If you and other members have any constructive ideas, the moderators always welcome your ideas (criticisms are also more than welcome) but please send them to the following email address: advaitins or send it to my email address: ramvchandran. We do welcome your suggestions whole heartedly and we can all help the list to serve the world community better. As a matter of fact, the list has the following postings subsequent to your postings and they are permantly available in the list archives and the numbers are 35701 to 35712, and 35716 and 35718. The post number 35718 was from one of the senior members of the list (also one of the moderators) paying a tribute to Adi Sankara. Aren't we all better off by diverting our focus from gossiping to spiritual discussions on Vedanta? Please take a moment and contemplate remembering Sri Adi Sankara. With my warmest regards, Ram Chandran
