Guest guest
Thank you Srimaan Sunder-ji for posting that link to Swami Paramarthanandaji's discourse on Guru Purnima- just a few posts ago , (post 36091) i had posted an excerpt from that wonderful discourse ... Swami Paramarthanandaji is growing on me - now , i regularly read his discourses on Gita on the web - not too long ago , another respected member Smt. Lakshmiji advised me to read his discourses ...specailly chapter 8 of the Srimad Bhagvad gita . Incidentally, Lakshmiji is my upaguru ! This brings up an interesting question - of late , we are hearing Dennisji talking about 'Shrotriya ( one well versed in vedas or shrutis) and Rishiji talking about a guru being being a 'BRAHMA NISHTA ' - DEAREST ADVAITINS, HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR A GURU TO BE BOTH A SHOTRIYA AND A BRAHMANISHTA ? WHAT AN INTERESTING THREAD THAT WOULD BE ? The preceptor, as Vivekananda said, is a gardener, who pulls the weeds away, cultivates the soil, adds the fertilizer of his own example and the water of his love. But the plant grows as a result of its own innate force. Hence the Indian saying: " Wonderful is the disciple and wonderful is the teacher. " Another Indian proverb proclaims that everyone gets the kind of guru he deserves! i would recommend all of you to read the following series of articles on the Making of a Devotee http://world.com/~elayj/Chapter1html on another note , we also hear the words 'Parampara ' and 'Sampradaya ' floating around in this forum ... May i recall the following verses from the Srimad Bhagvad Gita in this context on Parampara ? sri-bhagavan uvaca imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam vivasvan manave praha manur iksvakave 'bravit ( chapter 4 , verse 1) The Blessed Lord said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku. evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh sa kaleneha mahata yogo nastah parantapa ( chapter 4 , verse 2) This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost. and finally , this verse: sa evayam maya te 'dya yogah proktah puratanah bhakto 'si me sakha ceti rahasyam hy etad uttamam ( chapter 4 . verse 3) That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend; therefore you can understand the transcendental mystery of this science. Durgaji 's wonderful post also brings into focus the 'adhikaratwam' ( the readiness) of the disciple ! Just as there are some qualifications for a guru , there are also qualifications for a student ! It would be a good idea for beginners to Advaita to familiarize themselves with Adi shankara Bhagvadapada's TATTWA BODHA and Atma B Bodha ! ! Don't jump into a study of Brahma sutras without preparing yourself for you will lose yourself in the forest of Brahma sutras ! ! HERE ARE THE LINKS http://members.tripod.com/vedantamission/Pub/1Read/TBodha-1.htm http://www.geocities.com/advaitavedant/atmabodha.htm It may be a good idea to join a local satsangh of CHINMAYA MISSION ! advaitin , " Sunder Hattangadi " <sunderh wrote: > > Namaste, > > It is backwards! > > These two articles will be helpful: > > http://www.yogamalika.org/GuruPurnima1.html > > http://www.dlshq.org/teachings/sishya.htm > > > Regards, > > Sunder >
