Guest guest
More from Chapter two of 'Origin of Spiritual Instruction,' recorded dialogs with Sri Ramana Maharshi. --------------- D.: Is it possible for all seekers, whatever be their individual spiritual attainment, to adopt straight away and put into practice this method of inquiry in quest of the Self? M.: No. It is intended only for ripe souls. Others should get the necessary training and practice by adopting such methods as are suited to their individual development, mental and moral. D.: What then are the other methods of practice that may aid one who is unable to follow the Path of Inquiry? M.: They are stotra, japa, dhyana, yoga, and jnana, among others. (Editor's note: The various sadhana-s are practices solely for making the mind steady and one-pointed, for all these, thought and cessation of thought, attraction and repulsion, grasping and releasing are the vicara-s, or modifications, of the mind, and, therefore, do not pertain to one's true Being, which alone is real, changeless and abiding. To know this by direct and immediate experience as one's true nature and to abide in that state of absorption in the Self is call Liberation (bandha nivrtti) or cutting asunder the knot (granthi). Until one has obtained a firm hold on this state of pure Being, which is marked by perfect peace and tranquility, two alone are the indispensable sadhana-s, viz., not to lose hold of the Self and not to allow the mind to get contaminated by extraneous though. ----- Not two, Richard
