Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita make reference to diet

Dear Moderators and Members:

The references to the nature of food as well what should be eaten (and

the quantity to be eaten) are made in both the Upanishads and the

Bhagavad Gita.

Our sages knew exactly what they were saying. We can also take it for

granted that they knew that only a few will understand fully what they

are saying. Yet due to their overwhelming compassion, they have shared

the experience of wisdom.....perhaps because one never knows when the

power of words soaked in the truth of the primal being will ignite the

spark in someone's heart.

I am not a Vedantic scholar and will defer to others; but it seem that

to say that the topic of food has nothing to do with Vedanta is not

consistent with the actual words of Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita and

every classic yogic text.

It is more accurate to say that the topic of food/or any other topic

including Vedanta has nothing to do with the Self. That is absolutely true.

The Self is pure and free and ever new. It is its own food.

But if we consider Vedanta to be a means to know the Self, then one can

logically consider the topic of means to understand Vedanta to be useful.

Purification of the mind due to practical application (of meditation,

yoga, lifestyle, diet) falls in that category.

Namaste and love to all

You are right. There is a reference in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita to

three kinds of Food - Sattwic , Rajasic and Tamasic Foods in chapter

17 verses 8 to 10 ! In the upanishads also , Food is considered

as 'brahman' - in the Taittriya upanishad, there are many references

to 'food' ...

But you are wrong in interpreting the moderators message ! the

exact words of the chief moderator are :

" Would all members please note that this topic clearly falls outside

the scope of this discussion group, as per the distributed

guidelines.

It is not reasonable to permit one topic that falls outside and

disallow another. Only if *all* such topics are disallowed will it be

possible to moderate the group fairly.

Accordingly, I must request that discussion of this subject continue

outside of the group. "

You must be indeed grateful that moderators are magnanimous in

allowing you to use this message board to 'advertise' YOUR blog on

this web site ! In fact , we are all happy that you are willing to

share the wisdom contained in your blog articles with the rest of us!

However , we should not 8overextend the 8accorded to us because of

the goodness of the moderator's heart!

If you will notice, What started out as 'Vegetarian lifestyle ' soon

strayed into another territory - that of Nutrition - then to USDA

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS AND BEFORE WE KNOW IT IT WILL LEAD TO A

DISCUSSION ON HOW CERTAIN TYPES OF FOOD CAUSES CANCER etc etc .....

Moderators in this group are not control freaks - we must be

thankful there is virtually no censorship in this group ! don't you

want to enjoy that privilege?

Just imagine , only a week ago Binduji was awarded a yellow card for

violating list policies ... We all are subject to the same rules and

regulations that Binduji was subjected to!

so , harsha-ji , in all fairness, let us be 'fair' ....

I know you will understand !

love and regards

You are so 'divine' ! you took my comments in the right spirit ! The

idea was not to 'insult you or hurt your feelings but just to bring

home the truth that a moderator's job is not an easy one - no matter

what he does he is in the unenviable position of displeasing

someone! the yellow card system was instituted for only one purpose -

with a view to warn members from committing repeat

transgressions ... and i think, it is working very effectively than

the other system where only some members posts were moderated!

thanx for understanding! Your blog is great and i am delighted you

are able to bring out the best from some learned members of the

advaitin list ! More power unto you!

Vegetarianism is a hot topic and i am glad you are presenting so

many dfferent perspectives on it in your blog!

" !If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat? "

should i eat my own words ? ( my earlier post) just some humor!

love and much love to you
