Guest guest
Putanm: May i please share the following story withyou ? " As you contemplate , so shall you become " This thumb rule applies very much to any object of continuous concentration, be it a mantra-deity, or a butterfly as in the case of a caterpillar inside a pupa. One day, a wandering sadhu came upon a boy herding buffaloes. He was hungry, and the boy readily obliged him with some milk. After drinking to his satisfaction, the sadhu began to feel generous, and asked the herdsman, 'What would you like? I'm feeling fine, I'll give it to you.' The boy laughed and said,'I really don't need anything. I do nothing all day long but herd my buffaloes, and am fully satisfied with that. Besides, sadhu-maharaj, you came to me as a beggar and I gave you alms. How can I expect anything from you in return? I am the giver, not you.' The sadhu was taken aback by the reply, and realised that this was no ordinary buffalo-herd. But still feeling expansive he asked, 'What is it that you love most in the world? ' 'Why, this buffalo', the boy replied innocently, 'the one whose milk you just drank. She is the largest I have, she gives me 10 gallons of milk everyday, she is broad and string, so loving and beautiful, I love her best of all.' 'All right', said the sadhu, 'please do one thing. Go sit in that cave and imagine that you are this buffalo. Think of her, keep her picture in mind, completely self identify with her, become her ! As you sit doing all this, repeat to yourself " Bhaisoham, bhaisoham " (I am a buffalo, I am a buffalo). Don't worry about a thing, I'll look after your buffaloes.' The herdsman did exactly as the sadhu said, and after 3 days when the sadhu entered the cave, he found the boy sitting motionless with his eyes closed, repeating, " Bhaisoham, bhaisoham " . The sadhu said, 'So young man, how have you progressed? Come out now.' Out came the reply,'Don't call me a young-man! I am a buffalo. Can't you see that? Look at my broad back! How can I leave this small cave? My horns are too broad to go thru the enterance. Now don't be foolish; go away and leave me alone or I'll gore you and toss you out with these beautiful horns of mine.' But the sadhu persisted and said, 'Try to remember my boy, I told you to sit and do this. Now, instead of repeating, " I am a buffalo " , start to identify with Shiva and repeat " Shivoham, Shivoham " (I am Shiva, I am Shiva).' The herdsman did that, and in about fifteen minutes he was in a deep trance(samadhi). He realized his goal: The Universal Soul in the form of Lord Shiva. The sadhu was astonished. Tears came to his eyes and he said to himself, 'This fellow sits only three and a half days and achieves and I have wandered around practising without success for so many years.' Then he had to take that buffalo herd as his guru, and finally the sadhu also realized. ********************************************************************* *This is what happened with Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. What took his guru thirty years to achieve, shri Ramakrishna achieved in a few days. " This proves that time is not the critereon; if the desire is strong enough the result must occur without delay. All has to be forgotten except the name and form of the deity. Hence it is important to choose a mantra and deity to which has very strong inherent affinity for, the Guru can be very helpful here as he can look behind the make believe world of our imaginations. Both name and form are essential for worship. One part of the mind takes the shape of an object; that is form. Another part of the mind identifies and distinguishes it; that is name. To go directly to the highest form of samadhi is almost impossible. Even shri Ramakrishna had to worship Mother Bhavatarini for many years before his consciousness became one-pointed enough to achieve The Formless, but may be that was just Leela for all of us ignorants! Putranmji ! When Appayya Dikshitar went to Tirupati temple in South India, the Vaishnavas refused him admission. The next morning they found the Vishnu Murti in the temple changed into Siva Murti. The Mahant was much astonished and startled, asked pardon and prayed to Appayya Dikshitar to change the Murti again into Vishnu Murti. When Tulasidas went to Brindavan and saw the Murti of Lord Krishna with flute in His hands, he said, " I will not bow my head to this form. " At once Lord Krishna's form assumed the form of Lord Rama. If one worships god/ess with 'bhava' or feelings , sooner or later all feelings of 'duality' vanishes , one becomes 'One'' with the object of worship! This is keeta-bhramara nyaya! ( The mind becomes that on which it meditates in accordance with the analogy of the wasp and the caterpillar !) Putranmji , i Luv these words in your post ! " *Ishvara-prasAdAt samsiddhasya kasyacit eva Avirbhavati* -- `By God's Grace It reveals only to that rare person who has the highest achievement'. In advaita shAstras it is customary to depict God's Grace as Guru's Grace itself. " Putranmji ! The Ribhu Gita says By the absence of all sankalpas, by the elimination of all forms, by the conviction of there being only Brahman, be of the certitude that there is not anything that is non- Self. (which is why everything is Brahman))I am devoid of all names and such. I am devoid of all forms. I am devoid of all attachments. I am Brahman alone. ( Ribhu) We need Guru's grace to remove 'avidya ' ! God takes the form of a human Guru! Shri Adi Shankara bhagvadapada is Lord Dakshinamurthy Himself ! Shri Ramana bhagawan is lord Skanada himself! Om Shri Gurave Namaha! Om Shri Dakshinamurthaye Namaha !
Guest guest
namaste Dhyana saraswati ji you said " When Appayya Dikshitar went to Tirupati temple in South India, the Vaishnavas refused him admission. The Mahant was much astonished and startled, asked pardon and prayed to Appayya Dikshitar to change the Murti again into Vishnu Murti. " do you have any pramAna for this story? because, i was told a different story by a vaishnava here, according to him, this appayya dixit got defeated in vAda with a dvaitha swamiji named sreepAda raja in kumbhakonam, and hence dixita wanted to take dvaitha initiation, so he requested that from swamiji, for that dvaitha swamiji refused seeing his inner soul nature of dixita which was a crow...????!!! also that vaishnava friend of mine said, Vidyaranya swamiji (who was the key person in establishing vijayanagar empire in karnataka and one of the most revered pontiff of Shringeri sharadapeetha) was also defeated by vyasaraja and followed by his desciple jayatheertha, ...??? i asked him for the paramAna for his sayings, for that vaishnava friend of mine said, there has been some dvaja stambas (flag of victory) near mulabagal in karnataka saying the victory of dvaitha over advaitha...etc...??? but i was not sure what to say to him, as here (brisbane,Australia), i cant approach any one for clarification can any one clarify these things to me thanks in advance Narendra
Guest guest
Dear Narendra-ji: i obtained that cute little story on Apayya Dikshitir from http://www.sivanandadlshq.org/saints/appayya.htm i would also like you to read a story in post number 25936 - posted by Sri Madathil Nair - a shakta as well as a staunch advaitin! Read sri Nairji's commentary at the end of the story and you will find out hoow a vedantin views such miraculous acts of divine bhaktas! The point of narrating these stories is to make you look at the whole picture and to ask the seekers of Brahma vidya or jnana to go beyond names and forms ! Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to say " that which is kali is also Krishna and that which is Kriushna is also kali. " As your dwaita friends to figure that 'one' out! i would also encourage you to read Professor V. Krishnamurthy's post number 25910 on Appayya Dixitir wherin he writes " that the Vaishnavas have adopted Appayya Dikshitir's `Naya-Mayukha-Malika' as their manual for their careful and reverent study and the Madhvas the `Naya-Muktavali'. " PLEASE QUOTE THIS AS PRAMANA TO YOUR NON-ADWAITIC FRIENDS!! Narendraji - i am sure , you have read the biography of Swami Vivekananda ! You know , Swamiji approached his Master Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and asked him to request Sri Ramakrishna to request Divine mother Kalima to grant Swami vivekananda Food, job etc -The Paramahamsa declined and advised young Naren to meditate on Mother Kali and ask for these material things ! But when Motherf Kali actually appeared before young Naren after intense Saadhna , Naren became speechless and was unable to ask for any material boons! Narendra-ji , such is the state of a bhakta-jnani ! Appayya Dixitir was a great siva bhakta ! if i were you , i would not worry about 'pramana' etc but just try to grasp the inner meaning behind such stories that for such jnanis all is consciousness be it a siva murti or a vishnu murti ! love and regards @, " narendra sastry " <narendra.sastry wrote: > > namaste Dhyana saraswati ji > > you said > " When Appayya Dikshitar went to Tirupati temple in South India, the > Vaishnavas refused him admission.
