Guest guest
Perhaps Prana is a link between: " Physical and Subtle body " . Life will cease to exist without Prana. Indeed, Brahman is the basis for everything, including various states of Prana (Prana, Apana, Samana, Vyana, Udhayana,etc.). Pranam! In Purusha suktam Prana emanates from Purusha. Pranayama definitely impacts the subtle body and Swami Krishnananda says Prana is a manifestation of Atman. Is my body alive and functioning (including the 5 senses and mind) because of Prana or Atman ? Isn't it stated in Kena that 5 senses and mind function due to Brahman ? Then what is this Prana ? How is life force different from Atman ? Why is absolute reality called avyaktam ? Isn't Prana a manifestation of absolute reality ? thanks, Shailendra For ideas on reducing your carbon footprint visit For Good this month. Guest guest
Shree Sailentraji - PraNAms Here is my understanding. In principle, any vyaktam or manifestation is creation and therefore mithyaa. The real is unchanging and eternal and is called sat -chit swaruupam. PraaNa comes as part of creation - from annat purushaH - from annam the body is borne. And PraaNa that includes all physiological functions are part of the gross and subtle bodies. In the Chandogya Udaalaka teaches his son and ask him to starve for 15days - to show that both body and mind are products of matter - annam. But he asks him to drink water so that his praaNa does not leave him by dehydration. The boy could not remember all the Vedas he studied after starving for 15days. After breaking the fast and regaining the physical and mental strength slowly during the next 15 days, the memory also comes to him. He says praaNa is product of aapaH - water - here praaNa includes panca praaNaas - praaNa, apaana, vyaana, udaana and samaana. Matter is product of prakRiti - Hence Tai. Up statement. Body and the praaNaas both are functioning due to the presence of Life which manifests due to Aatma. In Kena it says aatma is life of the life - that which makes life to express through pancha praaNaas. Life force is the expression of Aatma when the body is suitable to express. When the life leaves the body, the body is expressed only as existence, since the upaadhi left is not suitable to express that life force since subtle body left that gross body. Aatma enlivens both the subtle and gross bodies - gross body as just existent matter (jadam) and subtle body as jiiva that is now moving to subtler fields of experiences after the death. Absolute reality is avyktam since it is not vyaktam and any vyaktam is manifested - hence created- hence mithyaa. Hope this is clear. Hari Om! Guest guest
Namaskarams Sri Shailendraji, Please also refer to the Aitereya Up. Bhashya Introduction. Shankara mentions about how some think prana is the basic thing and to realize that is the goal, then refutes that it is said that in the beginning all was [is] the absolute Self [Atman]. I may blabber below since I am no expert on prana; but as it is a forum, here are some thoughts for perspective. Sadaji's thoughts supercede. My thinking: from the relative context of creation, prana may be corresponded as cause or underlying substance, in the similar sense of how science might reduce matter to energy/forces. Brahman cannot be said to be cause of manifestation; Brahman is the substratum-Reality of what is identified in causal terms (mithya). And in the individual context, Brahman is identified as Atman. When you talk causally, you may say Prana is cause, but Shankara dissuades running after this perspective since it is grounded to materialism. The Self/Atman is the only Reality, and That Thou Art; so it is advisable to relate (causally) the sources of the material universe back to the Atman. thollmelukaalkizhu bhatnagar_shailendra <bhatnagar_shailendra wrote: Namaste, Pardon my ignorance of Taittriya.
