Guest guest
Dear Members: We have reached the culminating point and most of the issues have been thoroughly discussed by you. The issues are rather complex (several of you have already pointed out this fact) and they need to be understood in the broader context. We have to accept the fact that interpretations will likely vary according individual beliefs and convictions. Perceptions are also subject to change by time and this brings another dimension to our problem of understanding. When Sankara proposed the advaita Vedanta philosophy, those who followed the Karma Mimaamsa challenged the authencity of his philosophy. At that time Mandala Mishra was a great scholar of Mimaamsa and he challenged Sankara for a debate to establish the validity of advaita vedanta. The scholars at that time nominated Saraswani, the wife of Mandala Mishra (who was recognized to be very well versed in Vedas and Hindu philosophies) to judge the contest between Sankara and Mandala. This event and the entire biography of Sankara are reported in the Kanchi Kamakoti Website: http://www.kamakoti.org/miscl/adi.html and also in other websites containing biography of Sankara. This event further illustrates why we need to be very careful while making judgments regarding role of women during Sankara's time. Neither Sankara, nor Mandala Mishra or the scholars of that time had any objection to appoint a woman scholar to judge the contest between two male scholars. It will be more beneficial if we focus on the entire Vivekachoodamani instead of paying attention to one or two verses here and there. Any member who wants to volunteer and post a series of articles from Vivekachoodamani is more than welcome to contribute. Intellectual debates on issues are useful to some extent, but many times such debates have the tendency to divert from subject matter to personalities. When such tendencies emerge, we should recognize that as the good stopping rule!
