Guest guest
In continuation of my previous post on this subject I would like to refer to bRhadAraNyaka up. 4.4.22, which says:-- tametam vedAnuvacanena brAhmaNA vividishanti yajnena dAnena tapasA--- The meaning is—The brAhmaNas seek to know It (brahman ) through the study of the vedas, performance of yajna, giving gifts to the deserving, and austerities. Performance of yajna is the manner in which the gods, agni, indra, varuNa, etc., are worshipped in the vedas. This mantra says that this is necessary even for the desire to know brahman (vividishA) to arise. So worship of gods is laid down in this upanishad as essential for the spiritual aspirant. In the vedas indra is the supreme Being and not the same as the indra of the purANas. S.N.Sastri
