Guest guest
There is an of quoted sutra Yoga Sutra 1.33 which goes like this " :Maitri karuna mudita upekshanam sukha duhkha punya apunya vishayanam bhavanatah chitta prasadanam " By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and equanimity toward the non virtuous, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness. i would like to request my fellow advaitins to elaborate the relevance of this Sutra to the practice of Advaita philosophy ! The reason this sutra came to my mind was Sri Harshaji recently posted in advaitin list a link on 'shaking hands ' on his blog . Have you all read that aricle ! very timely ! In that article , Harshaji has stressed the importance of 'washing hands ' before shaking hands with someone ! this is a very timely warning because all over Maryland and dc, the newspapers are flashing headlines about the deadly superbug called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus( MRSA) which has claimed the life of a 17 year old student in Virginia ! and after reading Harshaji's article , i was reminded of the following sutra from Patanjali yoga shastra - yes! maitrim, karuna etc are great qualities to be cultivated .... any religion which helps us cultivate these great qualities is a great religion - it is called loving kindness or Metta in buddhism ! Advaita is not an 'ivory tower' philosophy ! it has to be lived and practiced in real life - showing kindness to one and all ! so , this brings us up an important point .... What is the relevance of Shankara advaita in day to day living ? thank you !
