Types of knowledge

Dear Friends,

Knowledge is of several types:-

I told you knowledge

This is what is the common knowledge that is available

everywhere. The veda tells you or Bible tells you or a great Guru

told you and so they must be right. Most of the religious knowledge

in the Vedas and Puranas is of this type. We all consider it true

because of its source, which we revere.

Logical knowledge

This knowledge is based on observation. The vast knowledge of

Indian astronomy , the knowledge emanating from Upanishads and a

large part of Gita belongs to this kind of knowledge. The great

philosophical knowledge we have inherited from saints like Adhi

Shankara, Ramanuja Madhva etc also belongs to this category. The only

problem with this knowledge is that it is not based on

experimentation and no attempt has been made to verify it ,.

Vignana or the scientific knowledge

This knowledge is derived logically based on observations and

then verified experimentally or through further observation. The

knowledge of the science of Ayurveda and possibly Indian astrology

to my mind belongs to this category, because after initial logic ,

the efficacy appears to have been verified by further observation.

If you could permit me, I would like to put the above slightly

differently...Atma jnAna as enshrined in shruti can be verifiable through

shruti approved tarka (shrutyanugrahIta tarka) & anubhava...after all our

bhagavatpAda emphasizes this fact and says brahma jnAna can be intuitively

realized here in this very life...he says in dharma shAstra & its

injuctions & results (phala) this provision is not there...but for brahma

jnAna, shrutyAdi (shruti etc.) and anubhavAdi (experience etc.) are valid

means of knowledge and the result of the same can be experienced here in

this very life.

Namaste Bhaskarji,

" ...after all our

bhagavatpAda emphasizes this fact and says brahma jnAna can be intuitively "

Could you please give me some references regarding " intuitively " and throw

light on this?

I have seen this term used by Holenarsipur Swamiji.

Sw. Dayanandaji dismisses intuition.

Namaste Lakshmi-ji.

I don't think you got an answer to your question yet.

However, I find that there are many references to *intuition* in the

quotes of Br. Vinayaka-ji's message # 38161 of today.

Dear mAtAji,

The sanskrit words used by bhagavadpAda in the quoted passages are

anubhavAdayascha/anubhavarUDam tu jnAnaphalam etc.,

This has been translated by george thibaut/Sri SSS as intution.

Warm Regards,

Br. Vinayaka.

So says the shruti also : ayamAtma brahma

sarvAnubhuhityanushAsanaM.(bruhadAraNyaka).. Sanskrit *variants* for the

word intuition would be avagati, adhyavasAya, anubhava..etc..However this

anubhava or avagati jnAna is distinguished from the sensuous

(indriyAnubhava) and the intellectual intuition (vEdanAnubhava)....
