*Translation of mahAvAkyas- No.26- Sentences conveying instructions.*

88. svAtmanaH anyatayA bhAtam carAcaram idam jagat svAtmamAtratayA buddhvA

tadasmi iti vibhAvaya—

This world consisting of the moving and the unmoving, which appears as if it

is different from your self, knowing it to be nothing but your own self, be

firm in the knowledge " I am that self " .

89. vilApya vikRtim kRtsnAm sambhava-vyatyaya-kramAt pariSishTam ca

cinmAtram cidAnandam vicintaya—Merging all the modifications in the order

opposite to the order of their origin, meditate on the pure consciousness

and bliss which is left.

vilApya- merging, kRtsnam-entire, vikRtim- modifications of prakRti, namely,

the five elements; or this may be taken as referring to the five sheaths,

those of food, vital air, mind, intellect, and bliss.

sambhava-origin, vyatyaya- opposite, kramAt- in the order.

pariSishTam- what is left—the Self.

The order of creation is—ether, air, fire, water and earth. Earth should be

merged mentally in its cause, water, i.e., it should be considered as having

no existence apart from its cause, water. Similarly, water must be merged in

fire, fire in air, air in ether, and ether in its cause, brahman. Thus all

things in this world which are all made up of the five elements should be

merged in brahman. Or, the sheaths may be merged one by one and ultimately

in brahman.

Dear Shri Shailendra,

All these statements are from upanishads and they have been collected by

some one and published. Shri R,S,Mani, one of the members of this group

wanted me to give the meanings of these sentences. Most of them appear to be

in the upanishads other than the ten principal upanishads and so I have not

been able to locate them. The book does not give the source of the

statements, apart from merely saying that they are from Sruti,

Regards,

S.N.Sastri

Namaste,

If the source seems to be of some significance, I may be able

to locate it in the Concordance authored by Sri Sadhale (1938, repr.

1990, Chowkhamba Publ., Varanasi.)

Namaste,

There is a reference to the authorship of Mahavakyaratnavali

in the Preface to Vicharasagara. The compiler was Sri Ramachandra

Sarasvati Svamin, paramaguru of Sri Vasudeva Brahmendra Sarasvati

Svamin.

Sri Vasudeva Brahmendra translated into Sanskrit the original

Hindi work Vicharasagara of Sadhu Nishchaladas, and added his own

bibliographic notations.

Sunder
