Attachment to subtle objects - An observation

Namaste All:

The recent thread of postings called " Need for a proper Teacher "

produced an understanding in me that I would like to share with the

list, hoping is an aproppiate observation to share.

Recently, reading some Advaitic material I read the phrase that

attachments are not only to gross objects but also to subtle ones, but

somehow this information didn't sink in very deeply at that moment. I

started this thread of Need for a proper Teacher after a quotation by

Sri Sadanandaji, asking him to expand more about what he said in his

post. As the responses got back and forth, without noticing it, my

level of " attachment " to the postings was growing (I realised this

after the fact). One thing I notice now is that after two or three

interactions with some of the people posting, my aim was no longer to

learn something from what they were saying but instead was to PROVE

" my " point. I was spending much more time in front of the computer

than I use to, waiting for responses/postings to arrive to see what

was the development of the topic. I became obsessed...

Yes, of course, the topic was somehow related to what is for me, now,

the major source of hapiness within the relative world of the mind, my

relationship with Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi. But, actually, that

can never justify atachment of any sort.

Taking a shower this morning everything became clear (eureka!),

attachment with thoughts (subtle objects)... " my opinion " , even if I

am a novice in these matters, somehow I needed to prove " my point " in

front of such beautiful Teachers like Sri Sadanandaji. I wanted to

" win " the discussion! How childish... and also how many times my input

to the list (even if it makes sense) was based on these wrong reasons.

I know it does not matter much for all of you, and perhaps I am making

a big deal out of nothing (one's " problems " always look " real " and

bigger than they really are), but somehow I felt naked in front of

this realisation. The impulse to share it also appeared and I decided

to follow it.

If somehow you read this posting so far, I have to thank you for your

attention and repeat once again that I am honored to be in such a List.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and sentiments. Yes

we do get attached to our ideas and sentiments. I

found this happens in Science also - people get

attached to their theories. Recognition of that

attament itself helps in getting detachement. You

have accomplished both.

Namaste Mouna-ji.

Thank God, I have company. If I am there on your boat, I am sure we

can look around and find many others too. This attachment to things

subtle is good in a way. It keeps our List ticking.

nair-ji and Mouna-ji :

Oh! Oh! Atytachments - if it comes to 'attachments' , i am the Queen

of 'attachments' - i am not necessarily attached to the list

called 'advaitin' but i am definitely attached to all the Satsanghis

who participate in this list! !

SATSANGATI IS NOT AN ATTACHMENT - rather satsangati is one attachment

that leads to detatchment

May i please recall the words of Sri adi shankara bhagvadapada ?

Satsangathve Nissangathwam.

Nissangathve Nirmohathwam.

Nirmohathve Nicchala thathwam.

Ncchalathathve Jeewanmukthihi ( baja govindam stotra)

Satsangati means company of good people.( SADHUJANA) Satsanga leads

to detachment (Nisangathvam). Detachment leads to dispassion

(Nirmohathvam). Dispassion leads to Cleaner Mind (Nirmalachittam).

Cleaner Mind leads to eternity or emancipation!

guys , this is a good 'attachment' - a Honey bee is always attracted a

fragrant flower but a 'fly' is attached to filth and squalor ! so be

attached to good things and detach yourself from bad things ! we

should indeed be grateful to the Advaitin list moderators for

providing us such a platform where there is free and frank exchange of

views and counter views.

nairji , on another note - how does one get Grace ? only through

Ishwera anugraham or purva jabnma phalam !

in fact , Sri Ramana bhagwan maintained " Guru is both external and

internal. From the exterior he gives a push to the mind to turn it

inwards. From the interior he pulls the mind towards the Self and

helps in the quietening of the mind. That is Guru's grace. There is no

difference between God, Guru and the Self. "

but even to obtain the 'grace' some self effort is needed - the

yearning to know the 'Truth' .... Grace does not descend in a vaccum!

Aum Sri Gurubyo namaha!

Thanks for sharing that, Mouna-ji. It is not always easy to admit to one's

own fallibilities! But don't worry - I am sure we have all done this at some

time! And, as you say, it is very useful to see it in action.

Best wishes,
