Brahman is beyond any notion of parts, so Atman = Brahman in totality.

The wave-ocean analogy may be understood as follows:

wave = jiva

ocean = collection of many waves = world (Hence, the jiva is a part of

the world)

essence of the wave = water = Atman

essence of the ocean = water = Brahman

Hence Atman = Brahman
