Om Namah Sivaya

Namaste,

I have a very simple question about Vedanta. I have not studied

mandukya - the answer may lie there. Vedanta says that the body, mind,

intellect and ego are all objects of consciousness. I am aware of all

these. So what happens to this consciousness in deep sleep ? Is

consciousness in unmanifest state in deep sleep ? Deep sleep is lack

of consciousness but consciousness never sleeps, right ? The

instrument that expresseses consciousness - the mind is asleep.

Please comment.

thanks,

Shailendra

Namaste,

An excellent question.

1. how to define deep sleep ? - ans : i had a good sleep. i dont't

know anything. i am very fresh. i relaxed totally. " yatra suptO na

kanchana kAmam kAmayatE na swapnam pashyati tat sushuptam " - maadookya

upanishat.

2. I say that i had good sleep after i wake up.

3. even without anything i say i was totally happy.(says in jAgrat

i.e. after waking)

4. in deep sleep Atman alone is everything called " samprasaadaha " in

upanishats.

5. but even in jaagrat & swapna it is Atman alone that exists.

6. asamkuchita chitpadmaha praagnavat swapna bodhayOh |- BruhadaaraNya

vaartika. means " this Atman is always infinity alone. because of my

bias on jaagrat & swapna i say Atman is infinite in deep sleep. "

7. in deep sleep there is only " agrahaNa " there is neither anyatha

grahaNa or pipareeta grahaNa.

8. nAtmAnam na parAmshchaiva na satyam nApi chAnrutam |

prAjnaha kimchana samvEtti turyam tat sarva dhruk sadA ||- MAndUkya

9.so in jAgrat & swapna Atman remains as Atman just as in deep sleep.

10. avasThA traya is just counting of fingers but fact is that it is

Atman itself which appears as avasTha.

11. summary : according to vyaavahaarika drishti - in deep sleep

Atman is not conscious of the self ( Brahman ) neither that he is a

jIva. body , mind, intellect, ego, etc, etc, everything is totally self

anone.
