Guest guest
Om dear all, Please let me know if you have information on application, admission and so forth regarding the Maharaja's Sanskrit College in Mysore. I am personally interested in the 3 years Advaita course, but I've found particulary difficult to uncover the institutional process and requirements. Any assistance is deeply appreciated. Guest guest
Om dear people, Just a note to thank for the insightful answers. As for Arshavidya, I thought Swami Dayananda was no longer offering this 3 years course. Few years ago I studied in his ashram and had understood that he would no longer hold that one, only seminars around the globe, especially after his heart condition. It's refreshing to know I have misunderstood the message. I'll look into that. As for the Maharaja College, thanks for the replies. It was brought to my attention that it is one of the five colleges which are part of the University of Mysore. Although it's not common for foreigners to join, it doesn't specify that one should not. As matter of fact I have encountered few who have. Mangalam! Once again, thanks for enlightening the subject. If anything else comes to you, please do not hesitate to share. Thank you forevermore. Om, P. PS. Thank you Shankar, I am currently in Brasil. Although I am thankful for having lived many years in America, it's not in my plans to come back. I would love to be exposed to this teaching immersed in your divine culture which I miss so much. Be well. Om. Guest guest
Namaste dear sister Patricia: From your emails, I believe that you are very keenly interested in learning Advaita in the traditional set up. Last year I went to the University of Mysore on a 6 month Fulbright Teaching Scholarship and taught at the department of economics and cooperation. At the university, all post-graduate programs (masters and doctoral) are open to everyone including foreigners. Most of the programs at the Manasagangotri campus is conducted in English but local language (Kannda) is often spoken during the classes. But Maharaja's Sanskrit College is a separate institution and it is catering to the needs of youngsters aged 8 and above. Mostly they learn Sanskrit and Vedas in traditional setup. I do not know whether they admit foreigners with no exposure to any Indian language or culture. The traditional method of learning consists of long class hours per day with little of social activities and learning is slow but thorough. The college describes (below) that courses vary between 2 to 13 years and that may explain that it is different from western style of learning. Given these facts, please check before hand and collect all information before you make any venture. They mostly don't use internet/email and only mean of communication is through regular mail. I suggest you contact Dr. Indira (below) who may be able to provide you details. Alternatively, you can learn advaita and Sanskrit from other institutions and I have provided contact information below. The Vedanta mission in Indore, Sandeepany in Mumbai and Vedanta academy in Mumbai may be better substitutes. You should be able to contact them by email and get detailed information on requirements. I really appreciate your interest in advaita philosophy and Sanskrit. Since your goal is noble, you will likely succeed in your mission. With my warmest regards, Ram Chandran 1) Maharaja's Sanskrit College: It is one of the oldest institutions in Mysore. The college offers courses in the study of Veda, Agama and Sastra in the traditional methods and is one of the premier institutions in South India for the study of Sanskrit. It offers teaching upto Vidwat standard in all recognised spheres of Sanskrit learning. The courses vary from 2 years to 13 years. Students from different parts of the State and outside are enrolled for the study of these traditional subjects taught by learned Sanskrit Pandits and scholars. The courses are conducted on academic year basis and enrolment is open for all those who are above 8 years of age. Coming into existence over a century ago, it has an excellent library of printed and manuscript works. Dr. R. They also run same courses as done by Mysore Maharaja College. Further Sanskrit can be learnt through Correspondence Course from Samskrit Bharathi which has got a web site also. They conduct 4 level courses in Sanskrit through English, Kannada and Hindi medium. Each level is for 6 months., known as Pravesha, Parichaya, Shiksha and Kovida. Kovida is enough to understand all Sanskrrit texts and Bhashyas. Sandeepany beongs to Chinmaya Trust and perhaps they conduct courses only for those who are prepared to become Volunteer in Chinmaya Trust. The course is free for 2 years with lodging, boarding. They cover mainly Bhagvadgita and Upanishads. Bangalore has got lot of experts on the subject and environment for studies especially for a foreigner.
