Guest guest
Namaste, I would like to understand Sri Ramana Maharshi's saying that the Self is found in one's own Heart. He even specified that it is on the right side of the heart. It is also pointed out that it has no relation with the chakra, or the physical heart. Self is liberated when the ego is absorbed, destroyed in the heart.
Guest guest
Pranam, In reply to your post, the right side of the heart is actually the center of the chest and to say that the Self is in the center of the being it could have been said 'at right of heart', this is like literary expression of It. However I am not much familiar with Sri Ramana this is only what I believe he could have meant. As scriptures also declare that Self is everywhere and not contained at one place, so there can't be a physical location of Self in any single part of the body, only reflection in mind. Namastute. Namaste, While I am traveling at the moment and thus do not have my books with me, I believe that it is in the Kathopanishad that the Self is referred to as residing in the heart, the size of a thumbprint, in the location which you have mentioned. Our teacher explained to us that this location is given for a point of meditation. It does not literarly mean that the Self is located there and not anywhere else, for the Self is everywhere, the true reality of every thing. Because 'I' am that Self, but take my/That Self to be one with the body and the mind, this location is given as a point for meditation. Recently I heard something on a CD of Swami Dayananda's teaching, which I liked very much. He is unfolding one verse of the Gita. (Extreme paraphrase) " After the creation 'I' (the Lord) am available in the heart of all as 'aham' (meaning the 'I' thought). " Regarding your second statement, the Self is always liberated, but the mind is not, when 'aham' (the 'I' thought) is separated out from the body/mind/sense organs, and realized to be free from all of them; and when all is recognized as my Self, then the mind is liberated and one is a jivan mukta. This is my understanding, which others may be able to clarify or correct. Pranams, Durga
Guest guest
PraNams Heart of an individual means the core of ones percenality - Like heart of the problem - Heart also symbolizes the mind and intellect together. The core of individual is aham or I am - That is where everything goes back into - prapanchopashamam - All three words dissolve into - waking, dream and deepsleep state. Right side of the heart is that which is not the worng side - The witnessing consiousness is the right side while I am this or ego is the worng side. That is where the meditation is to be directed to. The rest are all symbolic. This is how I interpret. Hari Om! Guest guest
Namaste In the language of the Upanishads, heart (hrdaya) means Intellect along with the mind. The Aitareya Upanishad says the following of the Hrdaya, which is seen as the Intellect or the Mind: " It is this heart (intellect) and this mind that were stated earlier. It is sentience, rulership, secular knowledge, presence of mind, retentiveness, sense-perception, fortitude, thinking, genius, mental suffering, memory, ascertainment resolution, life-activities, hankering, passion and such others. All these verily are the names of Consciousness. " (3:1:2) Sureshvara (Shankara's disciple) elaborates further the identification of the word 'heart' with the 'Intellect' in his Brhadaranyaka Upanishad Vartika. Wherever the Upanishad alludes the Self to be in the Heart, Shankara confirms that the 'Knowledge of the Self is seen by the Intellect (Heart)' and therefore we can infer that this Self-knowledge is a cognitive wisdom.
